This thread started sucking after the first page.

Yes, the record was important as the songs were already available on rehearsal tapes from 1988 and onwards and everyone who read fanzines back then was waiting for this record as it got already announced in 1990.

Yes, it would have been nice listening to the record with Dead, but he thought differently. Interesting people can listen to dozens of rehearsal tapes from tapetraders or to Bootleg-LPs with these rehearsals that still had Dead on vocals. Some had even a decent soundquality.

Yes, everyone has a personal taste. Some dislike the vocals, some like it. Some love the loud drumming, some hate it. Some would have preferred even more guitars, some say the guitar sound is perfect.

There is no need bashing each other like children Wink

Well said, Peter! Especially when it come to DMDS I never understood, how one can NOT lilke/respect/worship (the latter refering to me personally) that particular album. The whole atmosphere of "De Mysteriis..." has yet to be bettered ever since...just my 2 cents!!
P.S.
But then again, it's obviously the cool thing to do now, talking about badmouthing early 90s (Norwegian) Black Metal, pffff....... Rolling Eyes

To be honest, I don't file DMDS under "Norwegian Black Metal" or any such nonsense. I see it as totally beyond that. That's a market term and a cool slogan as far as I'm concerned.

There is BLACK Metal and then there is just bullshit.

- youre right!!!!! do you know why?!?!? because no other band has had their vocalist kill themself with a shotgun & have the bass player [ who set churches on fire & other shit ] stab & kill the guitarist [ which happened to be a leader of the "Inner Circle" ] which was highly publicized -

- can you think of a better way to have an "atmosphere" around an upcoming release?!?!? i dont think so -

- hahaha / thats funny. yes, people badmouth early 90s Norwegian black metal because they want to be cool... not that they think certain releases are overrated or flat out fuckin suck / hahaha -

It seems some guys have some image fetish and do not pay attention to the music that much... suicide, killing, arson....nonsense all the time. I think there is big gap between people who knew Mayhem before 1993 and those who heard about Mayhem later because of those murders and stuff.

Off topic but , for those interested , the castle in the booklet of Dissection " The somberlain " is the Bran castle ( aka Dracula's castle , though it's wrong ) in Transylvania .

I really don't give a fuck about all of the drama surrounding Mayhem. I wasn't there, I didn't experience. I don't know what it was like, and I don't pretend to. I think that it is an amazing piece of music in its own right, not because of the incidents surrounding the band.

Bran Castle is often marketed as "Dracula's Castle", but that's -as Albin already said- wrong. As far as I know Bran Castle was built around 1212 and was a stronghold of the Teutonic Order. Later Vlad just used the building as headquarter for his raids. The actual Dracula Castle is Poenari Castle -situated above the river Arges- and lies in ruins these days. So yeah, Black_Fire, I guess a preserved historic fortress is easier to turn into cash as holiday destination than some overgrown bricks on a hill.

Now, I won┤t join this little slugfest. ^^
Anyway, a question concerning the title and something for those who know their latin:
Shouldn┤t the record be referred to as "De Mysteriis Dom. Sathanas"? There is a dot behind "dom" on the cover, is that an abbreviation for Dominus?

Yay, quite a good question and your assumption makes a lotta sense to me, Kapalika. I have to confess that I've never thought about that lil' dot before. Embarassed The title should read "De Mysteriis Dominī Sathanas" then.

The guy's right.
Dom. is abbreviated which you usually find on tombstones, epistles, churches, etc.
