One of the great things about metal music is its visceral appeal to the emotions, which for me is a welcome break from the tides of pretentious bullshit saturating our media and institutions. Nevertheless, there are a handful of bands and musicians who are consistently thoughtful in the execution of their craft. This can come through in the concepts behind be the music, lyrics, interviews, art, etc.

Which bands or musical personalities do you find the most thought provoking and why?

lyrically, I've always loved D666, Axis of Advance & Sacramentary Abolishment, GBK
well written stuff, engaging to read in tandem with hearing the music

the overly latin religious stuff is cool to just listen to, but I find the lyrical execution to be over engineered dorkism

I casually enjoy reading those pretentious "occult" lyrics from bands like Deathspell Omega, Nightbringer etc.

I agree with Deströyer 666 and I would like to add Hail of Bullets for giving me free lessons in the history of warfare. Van Drunen does an excellent job with his lyrics.

Always found Burzum's lyrics interesting despite not giving a shit about Varg and his views.

My picks:

Slough Feg - Scalzi's intellect naturally shines through precisely because he doesn't indulge in pretentious bullshit, yet still manages to explore interesting themes with humor and wit

Manilla Road - one of the themes running through their music is that myths and lore of the past has something to say to us moderns. I meditate on this in my daily life.

Tenhonredbeast - not a metal band, obviously, but this band's interviews give me a lot to think about in terms of man's psychic connections with landscapes and animals.

The little I've heard of Skyclad lyrically.

Lemmy's lyrics are often very profound.
Fenriz of course is also a great poet.
And I really like the early Accept albums lyrically, very thought-provoking stuff.

When I want to reflect upon my inner musings and reach a deep personal space I reach for Butchered at Birth. With lines like: Dislocating, separating a blood-drenched body
Begin the anal grouting.
How can one not reach an almost meditative state of inward contemplation?

Ever heard his old band ENDVRA? interesting stuff and their interviews are worth looking into...the story behind "dream of dark waters" album title is worth the price of admission alone.

I love thoughtful music, the emotions and getting in touch with them when having been felled to the knee for intensity purposes... so much thought provoking down there to dwell on when kneeling... sometimes you can look up and see the concepts materialize in note form in the air... then quickly rise and breathe it in... this and red bull can give you wings, and maxi-pads can too actually, which probably may be needed for the thoughtfulness of it all.
