Sure, good bands. But neither are something that I would connect with this thread.

Are you sure? Acherontas are pretty far from simple "norsecore", their music is pretty well played and they have good production also.

This sounds a bit "orthodox-like": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7wOn8OVWx94

Averse Sefira. You can't go wrong with any of their albums. I am a big fan of Antaeus - CYAWS album and someone recommended me Averse Sefira when I was looking for something sharp and venomous sounding with excellent musicianship. If you don't already know about them, give them a try.

Averse Sefira made some of the best "modern" black metal. And it definitely has balls.

I love how the guy asks for music of value, yet the thread immediately turns into another "mention whatever bullshit that's cult" thread.

CORNIGR (Fin)!!! Just check out their (his) debut LP "Relics of Inner War", utterly brilliant devil worship!

From the album:

Shroud of Satan
Baptism Below
Discord
Death Trimorph
Banished and Casti Into Fire
Jaws of Time

Well as I said I kinda expected it. I checked some of those bands mentioned so far and only 2-3 of them actually fit the (admittenly very selective) parameters I stated. What I'm looking for are superior bands that I might have missed on, stuff on the same quality and class of Watain, Malign etc. With all due respect to the guy who recommended Averse Sefira, they're far from being a potentially classic band. Mortuus and Mgla so far have been the closest examples.

Advent Parallax is definitely a modern black metal classic.

Aosoth doesn't win you over? III was superb, and the other albums and recent 7"s are excellent as well. Especially Ashes of Angels and Our Crown of Sins.

I like Aosoth, but nothing they've ever done has particularly wowed me, not even III. I think Ravencult fits your request pretty well despite being a shameless Watain clone. Maybe Alghazanth's Wreath of Thevetat? Regardless of your anti-ancient records stance, you'd probably like Urkaos if someone played if for you blind.

Give it a shot; own writings, about to quit after 6 albums. From demo one we were "blamed" because we played "modern" black metal. If you like Ved Buens Ende with dissonant parts; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DkGb5nxY9SE or http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JrTKf3HT-9k for a more straight forward approach.

You know full-well most people only read the TITLE of the thread...

Anyway you really must add AOSOTH III and ASCENSION With Burning Tongues to MGLA and MORTUUS.
These 2 albums (Ascension's is a long mini album) are true and grand modern BM classics

ENOCHIAN CRESCENT isnt for anyone but they surely are in their own league, for good and bad. Its interesting cause they have really dedicated followers here in Finland but not so many foreigner seems to care about them.

Modern, check
Dedicated, check
Skilled musicians, check
