Early Unholy (Fin) has some very good basswork. Don't know about non-obtrusive though at times...
Also a really weird bass sound, which makes it kinda hard to really hear all the basslines but certainly adds to the eerie atmosphere.

The mid-section here is gold:

Negative Plane's SGR. Nice vintage 70´s bass. Too weak and medium for my taste but adds a lot to it all.

Personally I like obstrusive bass high in the mix. Big fat loud bass where you can hear the fingers or pick on the strings kinda bass.

So +1 to KVIST.
Also MÖRK GRYNING "tusen år har gått"

The best bass sound I've ever heard, high in the mix and in the middle, fucking fat and you can hear the agressive pick slashing the strings with fury, an intense and powerful with the perfect sound can be heard in the last album of the killer death metal band

Haven't read the entire thread, but these cannot be missed:

WATAIN - Sworn to the Dark (especially the unexpected swung melody on "Legions of the Black Light")

KRIEGSMASCHINE - Altered States of Divinity

I can't believe no-one has mentioned Cirith Ungol's "King of the Dead".

Also, not metal, but Wishbone Ash's "Pilgrimage" not only has some of the coolest bass playing, but the best bass sound laid to tape.

I will second CIRITH UNGOL - "King of the Dead" and add:

BLACK HOLE - "Spectral World"

The bass in that song sounds like it's being played under water.

Since you mention Black Hole (which I agree with), I'll also bring up Paul Chain's 80s work. I haven't heard his 90s stuff but it didn't matter who the hell was playing in any of his records, they all had some very strong musicianship and I especially like the bass work in Highway To Hell, In The Darkness and Ash.

Chris Richards on Breeding the Spawn... pity about the mixing on that album.

The bass work on this album is fucking exceptional. Really well played melodic lines, just like Don't Break The Oath.....
