They use it because many Earache vinyl represses have used cd-sourced audio, effectively making them 12'' cd-r's. Digby admitted as such here (the guy is clueless):
http://askearache.blogspot.com/2011/08/where-does-audio-for-earaches-vinyl-lp.html
If you're thinking FDR is meant to imply that it's superior to the original, you're not using the tag correctly. It's meant to point out that the repress should sound closer to the original than a typical new repress of an old album, nothing more. |
That is not what FDR means though. What if the original audio wasn't even recorded in FDR? _________________ WANTLIST:

Like I said, it's a dumb name. I'm also not an Earache rep. While most labels would have chosen to put a sticker on the repress that says 'mastered from original sources,' Earache chose to put a sticker that says 'FDR' when mastering from original sources. _________________ Good deals with: Numerator41, addison, deathsleep, witch sermon, xyosefx, invinCIBility, Weltbrand |

Here is another Earache quote on the matter:
| Earache wrote: |
Trends in vinyl come and go, shaped vinyl was all the rage in the 80s, picture discs abounded, whereas coloured wax was a rarity- you could have any colour so long as it's black. Nowadays coloured wax, swirls and splatter are everywhere, but the fastest growing trend is the audiophile analogue crowd who favour supreme audio quality over gimmicks. Our recent 2012 Napalm Death FDR (Full Dynamic Range) editions of Scum and Feto were made from original era analogue tapes and are audiophile editions with all dynamics preserved, and have been so well received, we'll do more of those soon, and advertise them as such. To be honest the explanation for any unsavoury sound on the 2002 editions was simply because the loudness war was in full swing in that period. |

scroll way down, ctrl+f "full dynamic range"
compare that to their non-FDR, from the link above:
| Earache wrote: | Thanks for the great question Jase. We recently re-issued the first 4 Morbid Angel albums on gatefold LP wax, and the audio for them simply comes from the CD, but newer acts have their wax pressed direct from the studio masters (also known as "files") obviously. The recent Morbid Angel wax was certainly NOT advertised as "coming from original masters/tapes" or anything, but partly due to audiophile concerns we did re-issue the recent Napalm Death 'Scum' vinyl as Full Dynamic Range audio from original PCM betamax tapes, complete with rough mixes (from cassette tape!).

| bottom line: as long as it sounds good, I couldn't care less where the audio was sourced from. It's not like they took just a brickwalled CD and slammed it on wax like many others do. |

It can't be possible at least with Blessed Are the Sick since they sold the master tape on eBay a few years ago... |
Technically thats correct, but nothing stopped them from copying the master onto another DAT or 1/2" before selling it. They could still use that second generation master and it would be only marginally lesser quality. Or the same if it was digital to begin with.
But ebaying that is pretty goddamn lame, I must say. |

I think that master was only used for cd audio - for the initial run of cds so it's useless now.
I wonder why they put a white Carcass logo on the sleeve on this version... |
