I have a hard time understanding how people could miss the most classic stuff, but I think the easiest explanation in a lot of these cases is that it's an age thing. That doesn't make what they consider classic to be any less viable. Just like some old asshole would be pissed that I couldn't give a fuck less about Elvis, I'm sitting here freaking out that there are people who haven't heard Bathory and Mayhem. It's really not a big deal. It's an age difference thing. Using myself as an example here, consider the following: if I got into black/death metal in 1998, that's 4 years after DMDS. If someone got into black/death metal in 2008, that means their 1994 was in 2004. So something that came out in 2004 to them would be seen similarly to how I saw shit that came out in 1994.
Now of course, there are always going to be examples of people simply overlooking bands, because there really is a ton of good music out there. Like I said, I don't know a lot of thrash, because it's not my style in general. Why would I investigate that avenue when there are other styles that I worship?
These are all things to keep in mind. Being a valiant metal curmudgeon just makes you (the rhetorical "you"; I'm guilty of this at times too) look like a tryhard asshole. |

No, it's too late, to be honest. Not that fond of Swedish DM in general, especially when it's on the melodic side. |

People are going off about the Bathory and rightly so....but this response is what is blowing my mind. Both bands are founders of their genres, but MA has sold millions of albums. I mean you almost would have to conscioulsy avoid them to never have heard them.

Don't know how well known these bands are but also did not bother with them simply because of the names:

Anal Blasphemy
I did however listen to some Anal Cunt and Meat Shits.
