You do understand the difference between being influenced by a band and actually sounding like one, don't you?

I think the above exchange pretty much says it all. Laughing

Back on the subject of Voivod, how is their 90's discography? I've heard it's quite different, but I never bothered to pick any of it up and can't listen to anything right now to check it out. I only know their 80's and 00's stuff.

For that matter, how's the new LP?

90s stuff sucks. New LP rocks.

That's a dramatic oversimplification of course, but basically the new one is their best since "Nothingface" and the ones in between mostly made me wish they'd go back to doing what they were best at. ("Angel Rat" is OK.)

Thanks, man. That's more or less what I'd assumed, just from reading stuff about that era. Is the 90's stuff more "rock" than metal? I wasn't too big on the 00's stuff at all. Guess I'll be making a run to the store later to try and snag the new one.

They mixed it up a lot actually. "Angel Rat" and "Outer Limits" were both proggy and poppy, with "Outer Limits" being practically an alt-rock album with prog metal aspects. After Snake left (and then came back) they went through some different phases - some of those albums are more metal, some actually quite heavy, but without the personality of their earlier, punkier stuff. "Katorz" is maybe more of a straightforward rock album that mixes in aspects of a lot of their previous stuff but a lot of the songs are kind of basic-sounding, to me.

So hard to choose...I guess Hatross is my favorite, but you could pretty much toss 'em all in a hat and choose one.

I can still remember when my brother played War and Pain for me the first time...it was like Venom multiplied by 100!

But - I think Nothingface is their masterpiece. Maybe the most unique metal album ever made, and it's an album that you can get completely lost in. Listen to Nothingface with headphones late at night in a dark room and give it your full attention, and you end up in another dimension. I know that sounds lame, but I bet some of you know what I mean. Brilliant.

And oh yeah...the new album rules.

Ignoring 'Phobos' is admitting you're an imbecile. Well worth checking out.

90s Voivod is great and their albums with Eric Forrest are probably my faves from that era. I think he gave the breeze of fresh air they needed. Nothingface is their peak mostly due to the cold mechanical mix they achieved, but these days however, I listen to 90s or even more recent Voivod way more than I check that stuff. Phobos sounds a bit too much like Prong at times for you goatsters : P but I can't even imagine why any Voivod fan would think Negatron sucks.
