There are countless examples of bands being torn apart by the fans and advocates of the underground for not looking the part or having UG-approved artwork or associating with the "wrong" crowd.
It becomes glaringly more exclusionary in NS themed bands but let's forget that discussion for now.
Does a scene that is, in many ways, incestuous and perpetuates based on mutual and thematic contributions of it's cast (many of which are veterans or "lifers") without any outsider perspective, have any room for deviation? Or does this ruin your listening experience? _________________

FTR - I am on the fence on this matter. Metal tends to be at it's best when it is violent, exclusionary, and basically raising a middle finger to anyone who tries to understand from the outside (based on founding principles). But this can also be it's biggest weakness and biggest reason to write it off, due to the perpetual recycling of themes and imagery. _________________

I predict 3-6 posts before Thurston Moore comes up
OT: I, at one time believed, or wanted to believe my idols of any particular scene lived life to the extremes they sang about. Now I am much wiser and know that only Lemmy is the way he present himself 24-7 and everyone else watches romantic comedies with their girlfriends and is nice to their grandmothers.... it's just rock n' roll when you break it down to it's core elements...... _________________ http://www.last.fm/user/ngadke |

To an extent. I don't really give a fuck about all that sort of 'presentation' but I hardly want my records to have a picture of a fat nerd in a tracksuit on the cover. I mean, that might be who made it, but the way the music is presented does matter.
So I guess basically, it depends on what the deviation is. Some are shit, some aren't. |

| Are we talking about how we perceive ourselves, and our own image, or the general image of black metal? |

Only reason having long hair is cool: headbanging. |

Does the entire band have to have long hair or just 1 or 2 members? And do the other guys have to be beefy guys with shaved heads? _________________

No importance at all, if I like the music I'll buy the album, it's really that simple. It's no coincidence that the quality of metal music went down the spiral after everyone became obsessed with image/aesthetics, it's clear that bands who pay more attention to the way they look than to the stuff they play only do so because they can't offer shit in terms of actual artistical content. _________________ Thread derailed
