I have a number of LPs I got quite cheap due to the fact that they have cut-outs on the sleeve. Am I right to assume that Metal is the only style of music where these cause a significant value decrease even though the vinyl might be mint. Why would this be? Are people really bothered by this? Personally I couldn't care less but I was wondering what other people's opinion is?

Definitely not just in Metal. Record Collectors seem to be more interested in MINT covers/packaging than mint records as far as I can see. A bit of rot on some records is great, especially if they'e from Brazil or some other far flung place...

Ah, my mistake then, I think I may have read that somewhere. Personally I would be more concerned with big price stickers than cut-outs Laughing

I really hate cut outs- I buy sealed cut outs to get myself an unplayed mint copy of the actual record and then swap sleeves. I'd rather have a worn sleeve than one with a cut out or hole punch.

What do the cutouts or hole punches signify exactly?

That it was in a bargain bin at some point. The cut-out is a quick way to signify a discounted item. It's obnoxious. Usually the labels do it when getting rid of the last remnants of stock on something that has stopped selling.

Good for getting cheap items though...

For any of the other hipster free jazz homos posting here, I'm sure any Arista Anthony Braxton LPs you have are punched out/corners cut. I don't think they sold more than 60 copies of each back in the day. Now they're classics and sell for big bucks. I think every copy I own and every one I've seen is punched out. In the case of the one with the four orchestras they put a big orange sticker on the cover because they couldn't punch through the box.....

Sun Ra did not lump himself in with "those freedom boys"

I could care less about punch holes or cut outs. A lot of my cds have them.

I bought Cathedral's The Guessing Game on CD shortly after it came out and it had a cut out. That can't possibly signify the item wasn't selling and they were trying to get rid of them, can it? It had maybe been out a month. I think I got it for $6 though, brand new.

Promo copies were often subjected to the same "mutilation".

yes holepunches to the barcodes of cds and cut out records are promo copies, spread around for free to reviewers and stuff. buying those copies for any more than $3 or $4 is a mistake.
