I'm looking for albums with a very complex, thick atmosphere. It should be an album that takes many listens to fully digest. Atmosphere and complexity is all that matters (not necessarily looking for it to be very "brutal"). The only albums I know of that are complex enough to meet this are Svartidauği - Flesh Cathedral, Misşyrming - Söngvar elds og óreiğu, and Abysmal - Antikatastaseis. Some bands that I checked out that weren't quite what I was looking for were Portal and Mitochondrion (too much focused on the experimental and brutal side, and not a complex enough sound). Recommend some bands and discuss.

Early Setherial, Limbonic Art - In Abhorrence Dementia, Nightbringer, S.V.E.S.T., Nawaharjan or Volahn perhaps?

Dismemberment - Embrace the Dark

Lots of different styles meshed together. Definitely takes a good listen or two to digest but worth it

I should specify that I'm not looking for anything creating the atmosphere using synthesizers. Orthodox black metal like Nightbringer would apply to this thread but it's definitely not limited to it.

Agreed. So we're looking at bands that more or less encapsulate the current Icelandic trend, which is somehow considered "complex metal" at this point? But no "symphosizers" (I really hope that was a pun)...?

You've asked for complex metal, which there is a plethora of, but the examples that have been given really don't fit the claim.

I was just listening to Impetuous ritual and grave upheaval, they fit the bill atleast for me. Desolate shrine, vassafor (to a lesser extent) also come to mind . But i bet there are dozens out there that sound like grave upheaval and the last antediluvian album.

Seems sort of paradoxical, asking for complexity and atmosphere when typically one overshadows the other.

Still, I'd say Volahn, particularly the most recent full-length:

Gorrch:

Bloodoline:

And lastly the instrumental demo version of Supreme Immortal Art by Abigor:
