Altars = the best death metal album ever made.

Quickly followed by Abominations and then Blessed.

Unholy Blasphemies is actually my favorite track on Blessed, so go figure...

Formulas Fatal To the Flesh! and here's my unnecessary anecdote: While driving this winter I got t-boned and thrown into a telephone pole by some asshole who was speeding during a snowstorm. When this happened I was blasting Formulas and had a split-second feeling of impending death. I've never felt that feeling during music before, truly putting the DEATH in death metal.

Tough choice. Altars it is though.

Love Blessed, Covenant and Formulas too. Domination is ok...like the description of it being militantly fascist! Gateways is pretty decent and so was Heretic. Will have to re-listen to G and H actually soon.

I didn't get into extreme metal until around the time Blessed came out so it was the first MA I heard and I developed a bond with it. That album will always be my favorite even if I got into the earlier stuff right afterward. But I didn't hear Abominations or Altars first and go apeshit along with the rest of the world. If I was 5-6 years older I'd pick one of those for sure.

Blessed was my fist MA album and it turned me off Morbid Angel initially for a year or two. Then later I decided to give them another chance, got Altars, and went apeshit over it. After which I got Abominations, went apeshit over that and it became my favorite. Laughing

So I don't think the order in which you hear them is that important

Still not a fan of Blessed, sounds too tame and restrained somehow.

People who are not into Blessed are spoiled turds! You shouldn't be allowed to listen to music. You have too high opinions with far too much access to whatever you want without appreciation for great records. Unholy blasphemies!

I really like the album, but I know exactly what you're talking about. It's the dry production that does it.

That's how it is for me as well.

Without a doubt, Altars of Madness followed by Blessed...
I could never get into anything beyond Covenant.

It's not dry it's shit. Like the production of Sepultura's "Arise". Nothing can piss me off more than a record ruined by the shitty work of a sound engineer. The only thing that rocks is DV's vocals. Guitars are weak as hell and way too clean, drums sound triggered while they are not (über fail). Well, I should stop here...

Blessed... is the primo example of great musicianship ruined by a terrible, terrible, terrible production.

I read that on the cassette version, the mix sounds more aggresive but I have not heard it yet to confirm.

Blessed... is spoiled by a crap production, but I also don't think that Vincent's vocals work very well on that album. His style clearly changed after Altars... and the new approach he used worked better on the more bombastic material of Covenant and Domination.
