Formulas is #3 in my list behind Altars and Blessed which means pretty damn good. Seeing them touring for that album to this day remains one of my favorite shows ever.

covenant overall

gateways to drum along to

formulas close behind

I think people should re-listen to Gateways with fresh ears. It has a stigma of being a bit "dull" but there's a shitload going on under the surface with that record and the overall atmosphere is immense. For me it took the furious sludge-like old-school vibe of Formulas and added back in the far darker and more atmospheric elements of Covenant. And some of Trey's solo work on that record is insane.

I'm a huge Vincent fan.

What's wrong with Formulas an Gateways? Just the vocals.
Would imagine how great can be that records with Demon Vincent doing the vocals... maibe a re-recorded some day...

Oh boy...

Formulas is perfect album apart for those interlude tracks in the end. Wish they would play songs from these albums live more now instead of the same old basic classic all the time.

Fuck that. Steve Tucker was perfect for Formulas, just as Formulas was the perfect album to make after Domination.

Not on my watch! Tucker's vocals on Formulas and Gateways are sublime! For me the best vocals after Covenant... he's a jumped up cowboy now doing the same swagger shit as Hetfield. Listen to his vocals on Illud.... pathetic.

Unless this was a troll post...

Tucker's vocals are perfect for Formulas and fit much better than Vincent's would have.

I slightly disagree with you. I don't think Formulas was the perfect album to make after Domination; the musical aesthetics sound different to me. In my opinion, the first Morbid Angel albums share their essence in pairs: that is, Altars/Blessed, Covenant/Domination and Formulas/Gateways. Afterwards, neither Heretic nor Illud Divinum Insanus sounds like the Morbid Angel we were used to listen.

This is a very subjective appreciation but at least it's what I think.

BTW, I voted for Illud Divinum Insanus because it has the shittiest death metal single ever: "Too Extreme"

I think you have OCD Very Happy

But seriously, what I meant was that Domination had a big sound, was very song driven, and Vincent's personality was stamped over all the tracks. Formula's was the complete opposite: dry, paired down brutality, non linear structures...it had to be. If they'd carried on from where Domination left off they would have probably made Illud there and then.

I agree. Although, I have to ask; what do you mean by " paired down brutality"???

Formulas is amazing. I can't even remember what I voted for, it could have been A, B, C or F- the order of my preference. Gateways is great too..otherworldly solos!

Listening to Gateways now, drum production totally fits the album.

Formulas destroys, simple as that.

The most evil MA is the bootleg version of "Abominations Of Desolation"
Mike Browning sounds like a fucking demon on that thing!

Formulas and Gateways are always going to be underrated. Meanwhile, people still drool over and worship Incantation and Immolation, both of who's albums sound strikingly similar after the first three. Morbid Angel always lays down a different sound with each album, something that aught not be taken for granted. Also, with the whole fast/slow album style rotation, Formulas and Gateways really completely define and expand each tempo root. That's where Heretic somewhat fails as an album, as I feel like Trey wasn't really sure what to do with another fast album, whether to make it a fast Gateways, to repeat Formulas, or to try something totally different, which he did, to mixed results. The slowest songs on Heretic are the best, the break/downtempo passages are the most thrilling, and the fastest songs are the most generic. Steve Tucker and atmosphere really save that album, much more than can be said for unmentionable "I" album, which picked up where David Vincent's Morbid Angel left off.

On somewhat of a side note, the three main players of Domination each released their own version of a followup. Trey's was Formulas, David's was Illud, and Erik's was the first Hate Eternal album, Conquering the Throne, which, sonically, is one of the very few albums I find comparable to Formulas in terms of intensity and atmosphere...
