I don't think the production of Formulas is so bad or the drums different..
Generally,MA ,since Blessed are the Sick, they used to have the best production as possible and their drums had the not so old school sound in comparison with Autopsy.
I like the muddy sound on Formulas. Not soft and weak at all.It adds points to the atmosphere.

Gateways has the worst drum sound sadly..The clicked-triggered drums ruined the album..Too bad, because musically ,it was another one MA masterpiece. And why the fuck ,Sandoval used those tricks? Is he the best or not?

They are my favorite death metal band as well.

Abominations of Desolation

Altars of Madness , and Blessed Are the Sick have their moments, and these three I might consider re-buying, but I get bored usually 1/2 way through many songs on Altars and Blessed.

I agree about the production for the most part, but I find that cranking that fucker up helps out a bit. Drums are definitely a bit dry and clicky, but not as irritating to me as they are on Covenant.

I don't care much for Tucker's vocals on the album, they are rather monotone... but I don't fault him for it . I don't think he has the option to make them 'catchy' like Vincent did because Trey wrote so many damn lyrics for each song that Tucker has no choice but to rush them out as fast has he can in most sections. Luckily the music is killer enough that the lackluster vocals don't bother me.

Yeah man, the lyrics are essays of invocations! Personally I think Tucker did a good job, but I can understand your point.

I like the production on Formulas..and have never really thought of it as 'muddy'...

I can't remember what I voted for to be honest...probably a toss -up between A, B,C & F..

My favorite Morbid Angel albums would probably be Altars of Madness, Covenant, and Gateways to Annihilation. Gateways is incredibly underrated if you ask me.

As much of a genre defining classic as Altars is, I'm going with Blessed as that was the album that introduced me to the band. And there are some real classic death metal tunes on that album! If Thy Kingdom Come and Abominations don't get you going, you must be deaf! Very Happy

For me albums A-H are all excellent, excluding the live album as I have every live album I've heard. Altars, Blessed, and Covenant are all amazing, each milestones in their own right, although I prefer Formulas and Gateways to the earlier albums. F and G both take everything Morbid Angel ever could have been and made it so much better. I also still listen to Domination somewhat frequently, as the style, solos, and much of the riffing is top notch and showcases the change in style between the Vincent and Tucker eras, plus the instrumental tracks are my favorite on any MA release, particularly "Dreaming." Heretic I also found to be a pretty good album, and for every somewhat "uninspired" song, like "Enshrined by Grace" or "Curse the Flesh," there's a totally twisted and exceptional song, like "Beneath the Hollow" or "God of Our Own Divinity."
Even though I still adore "Gateways," with the counter-play between Azagthoth's and Rutan's vastly different solo styles, and the creeping cosmic keys, but I voted "Formulas." It's easily MA's fastest album, and the most transcendental. Trey always complained about the way "Domination" turned out, and "Formulas" is exacted in a dark vengeance. The keyboard tracks are a little weak at the end of the album, but they all sure as hell beat everything on that god-forsaken, definitely-barely-worth-mentioning "I" album.
And now since Pete's a Christian, the true MA will never again be...

Domination for me. It was the second original tape I bought, must have heard it over 100 times.

1. Abominations
2. Covenant
3. Formulas

I like them all, but that's what I listen to these days the most. I can't wait until they release an "I" album. Hopefully they haven't lost their songwriting edge. They're still really good live, anyway.
