Cracking review from Metal Recommendations.

'The World Rots Faster' by Crypsis (UK)

When I think thrash metal, I think Germany or South America, not necessarily the UK. And if it is older thrash metal that IS from the UK, itís not usually all that great. However, I can rest peacefully now, because the band Crypsis has finally shown the world that both they, and the UK, are capable of creating some mighty fine music with their debut album, The World Rots Faster.

Even though the band hails from the UK, songs like ĎDemented Greedí and ĎAsphyxiantí definitely sound Teutonic or South American in certain moments, but also are reminiscent of blackened thrash acts from home, like Venom, which to me, makes for an interesting mix. And although the shouted vocals are typical for the genre, in Crypsisí case, theyíre unique enough to make a traditional element into something new. As well, songs like ĎMan-made Miseryí has this energy akin to something Anthrax or Municipal Waste would come out with, but I dunno, thereís also this seriousness found throughout The World Rots Faster that keeps the album grounded.

Iíll be honest with you: Iím not the hugest thrash metal fan. A band in this genre must have something special if they manage to impress me. And wanna know a little secret? Crypsis managed to impress me. I donít know how, thereís no obvious reason, but The World Rots Faster as a whole, is an incredibly mature album, despite the fact itís not only a debut, but a thrash metal album too. Yes, I understand, there are mature thrash metal bands, but more often than not, itís the bands with the heavy partying habits that we all know about.

Yes, Municipal Waste, Iím talking about you.

Anyways, we know Crypsis means serious business. Even the artwork for The World Rots Faster seems to radiate it Ė I dunno, but it almost reminds me of the kind of artwork the old guard would come out with in the 80s, especially if it was in the form of a demo and money was tight. To me at least, the album art is pretty damn cool, as well as incredibly creative.

And what I think is kind of interesting is that they also draw influences from early grindcore acts like Carcass, and although the sound doesnít carry through as strongly as some other genres, I can still detect hints of it, especially with the drums and vocals, and I personally think thatís pretty badass.

Well, I should probably wrap up this review, so Iíll leave you with a very short message: check this out. Itís a very tight, mature debut thatís really set the bar for awesome thrash metal. Hell, Iíll make it easier for you to check them out by posting their Bandcamp profile: http://crypsis.bandcamp.com/album/the-world-rots-faster

There. Now you have no excuses. You know what to do.

Rating: 8/10

Notable Track(s): Asphyxiant, The World Rots Faster, Man-made Misery
