Definitely a tossup between Pentagram and UTSOH for me. UTSOH, while being absolutely awesome in its own right has a huge nostalgia factor in being one of my first black metal albums... that first riff in Krig has never left my head since.

While I acknowledge its status as another classic, Antichrist never did click for me like the aforementioned two...
That riff is one of the best riffs in black metal alltogether.

For me "Antichrist" is their best, followed by "UTSOH" and "Pentagram" (although "Pentagram" was quite banal BM already at the time of its release). Btw, I'm one of the weirdos that also like "Destroyer". Haven't heard the latter stuff.

Agreed. "Banal" is a fitting word to describe their sound. Gorgoroth did what they did well, but they have never belonged to the pantheon of the genre.

First three are greatest definition of pure black metal to me, great band it was. If I must choose - Antichrist.

Wrong. I agree that some riffs on Pentagram could be classified as "banal", but riffs like the one at the end of Ritual, the riff in the beginning of Huldrelokk and pretty much the entirety of Måneskyggens Slave etc. are not fucking banal. Don't get me started on Antichrist and Under the Sign of Hell.
I don't know about the consensus when these albums came out but to me Gorgoroth was always one of the best.

Most of my friends liked Gorgoroth back then, but none of them would have traded them for Burzum, Darkthrone, Emperor or Mayhem. They were generally considered second-tiers.

I obviously can't speak on behalf of the entire world smartass. This was the consensus in the local scene I was part of at the time. Take it for what it is.

I gotta go with Pentagram, haven't listened to it in ages but that thing has riffs that stick in my mind to this day, I also like my Wild Rags version which plays out as one long track

Pentagram is easily in my top 10 black metal albums of all time. Everything after Destroyer is garbage, though that album itself has it's terrible moments.

What?
Sure you can ...we are elitist assholes.
Another thread has already determined this and I agree.

It is the duty of every hardened black metal hater to make a hipster cry.

Demos and the first three albums are glorious, and were major staples of my 'early' years. Voted for Under the Sign ... simply because it is the one that I tend to return to the most ... Pest's vocals, ferocious production, etc.
The last album I purchased from them was Destroyer. It was/is crap (imo), and I was highly skeptical of anything they released afterward. Once the line-up changes started looking like 'free-agency' in a modern, professional sports league ... I lost complete interest. Too much other amazing stuff out there for me to dig in to.

That last 'new' Gorgoroth album was as linear and plain as any release could be... how did it sound again or what songs were on it? ...yea, exactly.

The Godseed on the other hand... that was good. Blasphemy? Fuck you, that band is Canada's glory. Godseed was just more interesting than that last Gorgoroth album. (perhaps it was a rush to release something/anything after that whole lawsuit stupidity)
