Any thoughts on Magma and Zeuhl music?
I'm a big fan of Magma, saw them live during their last sets of gigs in Paris, it was incredible, Mekanik Destruktiw Kommandoh played in its entirety, killer.
I'm not familiar with any other Zeuhl bands, I've heard some song from Shub Niggurath which sounded pretty good, I've also listened one from Univers Zero, really extreme but I didn't like it as much. I'd also want to get myself a record from Offering, one of Vander's side-project, which I heard is great... |

I'm not an expert on zeuhl by any means, but I listen to Magma occasionally.. of the albums I heard, Köhntarkösz is my favourite but I prefer Shub-Niggurath...
check out Archaia and Kōenjihyakkei |

I have the Archaïa LP, really weird stuff. Didn't spin it that much, I'll have to give it another go.
I've heard one song from Kōenjihyakkei on youtube, pretty fucking weird as well... |

| I listen to Magma relatively frequently, but haven't actually listened to other Zeuhl bands. I should probably remedy that... |

my old band covered "de futura":

magma, i love, but i probably never actually need to listen to them again, if you know what i mean.
i always thought their studio records were a little puny. the way to go is their raw live albums like theatre du taur and reims. ballsy shit.
the first two univers zero are favorites of mine, particularly the first.
bassist bernard paganotti was in this zeuhl band weirdorje. their lone studio album is pretty uninteresting, but the bootleg of their unreleased second is massive.
the first two present records might appeal to you. shub niggurath is very dark and abstract, not as militaristic or rhythmic as magma, more nightmarish. _________________ http://www.ugEXPLODE.com

I fucking love that cover of De Futura, mate. I have a friend who thinks the entire I&D album was one of his "life changing" moments with the twin basses, no foolin'.
One not mentioned is Jean-Philippe Goude, who made a very Magma-esque album Drones in 1979. Weird shit, to be sure.
Univers Zero are fucking great. I only have the first album, but it's killer.
I keep hearing about the live Maga albums but haven't shelled out for them, but maybe it's time to hit the blogs.... I'm sure Vander would be okay considering I spent a fuckton of cash on the Magma box. _________________ http://www.last.fm/user/ngadke |

| Of the above list, I've heard Univers Zero, Amon Duul and Yeti (and like 'em all). Looks like I need to do some more research/acquisition. |

| Are there any bands with a sound similar to Shub-Niggurath's first LP? Really not familiar with this stuff at all, but that record is insane. |

It's not Zeuhl but it is really good prog stuff, and may be interesting if you like Univers Zero and the like...

Edit: I guess they are classified as Zeuhl too. |

About live albums, I really love the 1975 one :
Köhntarkosz, Hhaï, Lïhns, and an excellent alternate version of Kobaïa, great stuff. It's the only live album I know along with Retrospective vol. 3 which is good but not essential. I heard the Theusz Hamtaak Trilogie is really great, I'd like to get my hands on it.
Really great cover.
Magma also play a new song live which is really excellent, apocalyptic and chaotic :

The new album will be great. |

Strangely enough, after earlier in the week prompted by the mention in the 'scary music' thread, I checked out Univers Zero and Shub Niggurath and liked what I heard.
Walk into a record store today and find a copy of Univers Zero 'Heresie' for ten bucks. |
