It seems to me anyway, that with instant listening and instant downloading & good old social media, a relatively underground band that releases an album in say February will know if that album will propel them to the next level of hype & worship by say March or at the latest, April.

Contrarily, in the Vice age, if a band doesn't get a ton of hyped feedback by the 3rd month an album has been out, it seems like it's probably just not going to happen.

Once you've become big, then everything becomes pre-jocked. I'm old but I'm not ancient. Was this the way it was in the 80s and early 90s, or did albums from unproven bands take a while to settle in to being classics?

I was too young at the time, but aren't Beherit and Incantation perfect examples of bands that took a long time to get the recognition they deserve in the underground?

And the Vice stuff is just depressing... if you're throwing Kim Kelly a few bucks for PR and don't cross any lines on content then you'll get sold hard to Vice music fans who don't like really like metal

Yeah. Incantation, Beherit, Archgoat, and LITERALLY thousands of other older bands got huge boosts from the Internet, file sharing and social media. Take those away and how many reunion tours and albums in the last decade would you have wiped out? But that's another topic. Just wondering how fast albums are beloved in this age compared to other ages.

"Most black metal fans have decided not to talk about it"

More like most black metal fans aren't susceptible to retarded SJW lynch mobs under the guise of "making a difference" when everyone with half a brain recognizes that they're MUSICIANS, and only crazy idiots would emulate criminal acts by musicians. Fucking idiots.

"Let me offer my expert opinion on something I have spent ten minutes listening to while I read a Wikipedia article."

Cool

Maybe I'm slow on the uptake, but I'm still discovering albums and bands that have slipped past my radar on a nearly weekly basis, regardless of when they were released.

Never liked Incantation, so don't know.
But Immolation ( a bit similar) did receive attention immediately.

Beherit also.

He probably read this forum actually. We seem to be one of the last bastions of free expression as far as online black metal communities go, so much so that most other people who know of NWN refer to this place as a nazi hangout and an elitist enclave. It's easy to throw words around when you're too stupid to dig into music without an agenda.

With some bands it goes the other way round.

The hype of Sacramentum for example.

Bard killed a guy when he was 18 and involved in a juvenile who-is-the-most-evil pissing contest.

Not sure why someone would want to continue to repress this man's life 20+ years after the fact, after he's served his time and shows absolutely no signs of repeating this behavior.

Well.... I mean come on dude they aren't totally wrong. Shocked

OT: I feel like the labels themselves are just as guilty as these PR machine magazines. Labels write up this hype bullshit (FFO SLAYER AUTOPSY BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN OPETH NAZARETH AND FIVE FINGER DEATH PUNCH) andbthe magazines just regurgitate it over and over. I mean look at Decibels year end list. I'd wager 85% or more are from labels that take out big glossy ads and the other 15% they're trying to entice. It's a vicious circle and all you cab do is try to use your own judgement and not get swept up in the hype....
