Maybe this is only me, but I think a lot of bands don't really care for that anymore. In my opinion, the band-name is very important in Heavy Metal and it should be chosen carefully.

Of course, nowadays most simple and memorable names are already taken since the 80ies and 90ies (sometimes even by multiple bands), but with internet you can check pretty fast if your idea is not already taken. Also, I would say that it became harder to come up with something new, but isn't that the point of creativity, to make some effort on your own?

If you don't know what I mean with a "bad" band-name, here are some subjective criteria out of my mind:

- bandnames that are just lifted from another band's song- or albumtitle, without being musically influenced by the band in question
- cryptic and hard to pronounce names in obscure languages like Latin, Greece, Icelandic etc.
- bandnames that are longer than 2-3 words

(like always, there might be exceptions to those "rules")

Other opinions?

a long band name most probably belongs to a "modern" bullshit band iconized by mtv-losers, so this parameter allows me to ignore the band without even having to listening to it Very Happy

The only thing I can't stand is when a band choose a name already used by another band (being active or not). Some imagination please...

My biggest beef is picking a very common word (like Witch or Mountain or what have you) and reusing it "craftily" with other words, I mean come the fuck on people its 2013 already...

I don't mind as much when bands pay homage to another band via a song title...

I hate when non-French bands use French names (or lyrics) because usually, they can't pronounce it/them right.

I hate band names in Latin.

I hate most "bestial" bands' names.

I wouldn't say there's some "rule" to which band names are good and which suck. Except the obvious that sentence or quasi-sentence band names suck, like asking alexandria, bring me the horizon etc.

Death to the "sentence bands"!

If some band is named And I Put It In My Ass, I know right away that it's metalcore and I'm cleared to fire at will.

It's important for shure but man.... unless u are actually the artist... you have no clue.. my point is, most people just don't know and thus no capacity to understand. Happy hannukah oh jew jewlerers. Its also about metal getting "smart". Aestethis can be overcome by intelligence. Aeons shuffle. That was not whatitwasintheeighties.
This our new era is complex... So study! To make what ever your ideal.

Yes. Stick to your native language or English, I guess.

As an example, I don't really care for the name Mitochondrion (for whatever reason), but the band is so good I don't care whatsoever if it's not exactly to my tastes....
