Obtained Enslavement is in my mind one of the few bands that got the mix of Black Metal and classical right. My own personal fave is the baroque-esque Witchcraft. _________________ http://www.dissectionforum.dk/ |

I've praised Witchcraft forever... I hope I've made at least someone notice that this band created (CREATED!) some of the best polyphonic black metal in the history of the genre. Witchcraft is an abyss of overlapping, intertwining melodies and the songs remind me far more of classical music than any metal. Even those guitars could be violins! One of the two or three black metal albums I could rate almost ten out of ten. It's just THAT good.
Not to say I don't like the rest, because I do. Centuries Of Sorrow has the same elements which would blossom on Witchcraft, but in a more condensed, raw form as you'd expect from a debut. Raw literally, those wailing vocals are really something else.
Soulblight maybe a strong second? The sound does not entirely do justice to the music however, but luckily doesn't obscure it either. The remastered version didn't change much...
Last album was like another band, but there are still those moments that manage to redeem it somehow. Not as bad as some say, but I think it goes without saying that this band made its mark with Witchcraft.
Last I checked, Heks was in a pop group called Alister, which hasn't released anything yet. _________________ §:-Ğl |

Next to LIMBONIC ART one of the best symphonic black metal bands.
Everything minus that horrific SHEPERDS album they did was top notch
WITCHCRAFT AND SOULBLIGHT are neck and neck to me. |

Seems like I am only one who voted "Soulblight". For me it is THE Obtained Enslavement record. Dont know why, but still dont get same feelings from other records. Maybe cause its first OE record for me so it has so much nostalgia.
Tried to get in to "Witchcraft" but dont have patience to listen it so much that can fully understand it. Maybe cause it sounds so different when comparing to Soulblight and I subconsciously compare them. But what the hell, I dont even like early Satyricon, so dont need to like everything I maybe should.
Soulblight's production is great, only guitars should be more on top. Its like melodic version of Gorgoropth's "Under a sign of hell". Gotta hail Krieghall's sound engineering _________________ Mors fennico more |

Picked Centuries of Sorrow as I haven't heard Witchcraft in quite some time.
Whoever voted for Shepherd... should out themselves. |

Went to a party in Lysekloster last year and the guitarist was playing covers of 60s music with a band..then he played abit of ...of sorrow on guitar for me. I became happy and bought another beer. For me it will be Centuries since we all listened to that when I grew up. They even had a radioshow in about 91 or so we used to listen to on local radio...happy days. _________________ ON DISCOGS:
