A while ago I ordered the CD version of Bathory - 'Blood Fire Death' off of Amazon. When it arrived i discovered it was a Canadian licensed version by "MAZE/KRAZE RECORDS". The cover art was of bad quality i.e. blurry and cropped as if someone had just taken a photo of another CD cover. Also the music sounded flat and harsh as if it hadn't been mastered properly. This made it almost impossible to listen to and enjoy.

I know there is a 'Black Mark' CD and vinyl version available. My question is: Can anyone tell me if the sound quality on these is any better or is that just how the album is?

Additionally, I assume the 'Black Mark' cover art is of much better quality? Also wondering if anyone else here has had the same experience as me with the MAZE/KRAZE RECORDS version?

I don't know but... have you ever heard the album they recorded that they scrapped and replaced with that instead? It's unreleased as far as I know, but I've heard it and it's just fucking god aweful!!! I'm glad they put out that one last black metal album instead of what they had originally recorded... from what I remember it was an aweful terrible failed attempt at heavy metal that turned out just about as bad as discharge's failed attempt at heavy metal. I Don't think many people know about that unreleased album as far as I know. But I'm very glad bathory had a change of heart and created blood fire death instead.

Wasn't that 'Blood On Ice'? Which was later completed and released in the mid 90s and is completely awful. Or was there another one?

There is absolutely nothing wrong with sound or cover quality on Blood Fire Death CD released by Black Mark in 2003 and I also don't have any complaints about quality of their other Bathory CD rereleases.

Thank you! It's looking like people should watch out for the 'Kraze' version I've got. Unfortunately it's the standard version sold on Amazon and also the most common version available for sale in stores in New Zealand.

Welp... I guess it was released in 96 as blood on ice... always thought it was unreleased, goes to show how much attention I pay to 90's bathory Razz

Get rid of your Maze/Kraze copy and get a Black Mark copy because you'll be doing yourself a favour. Everything about the Kraze version is subpar compared to the Black Mark.

I don't know if I am remembering correctly, but I think that there was discussions a number of years ago about the Kraze version of this album being a bootleg.

I own a copy of the first Black Mark pressing of the Hammerheart CD (the one with the hand drawn logo to make it clear) and in all fairness it sucks so much I can hardly listen to it, as the sound is extremely distorted when played at higher volume. The Noise version is way better than this piece of shit.

I also find the Under One Flag CD press of Blood Fire Death far superior to all the later Black Mark pressings. It seems Black Mark was in for a quick buck since day one.

Wondered that too but is it cause "back then" CD was quite new thing and not everyone knew how to make them. Maybe they used same master that was done to LP or maybe even made their own master from the LP or something...?
