I have the vast majority of Hot Metal mags so I'll have a squiz when I get back home from Melbourne |
I think it was a review of one of the first MFTB events _________________ "14 words: we must secure the depravation of the children and ruin the whole fucking world..." |

Its worth noting that Daniel/Modern Invasion had a feud running with the editor of HM who was a petty and ridiculous individual. Thats probably the root of that. Kriss hades worked at HM on and off and there were periods were sad ex were greatly supported. Throw in a dash of syd vs melb too (hm a sydney publication, bw a melb and) and there are reasons enough.
When violence and blood and valour were released berve totally flipped championing d666 where he had been an advocate of bw in the past. _________________ Ashes to ashes

| From memory the editor was a female. Did Janeka try to hit on her? |

I remember them getting a very negative live review, pretty sure it was from Jeremy Sheaffe. If memory serves me correctly he struggled to deal with anything heavier than Metallica. _________________ -------------------------------------------------

Pretty sure he was editor at the time. I'll have a dig around later, although I don't think my Hot Metal/HM collection survived the last move. _________________ -------------------------------------------------

Haha i'm sure people we're pretty shocked when they heard BW |
The "scene" was pretty different back then. Not many bands, virtually no international tours and BW or CM had the right connections.
CM were pretty confronting back then, definitely unlike anything I'd seen live. _________________ Ashes to ashes

I knew all these guys back then and there was zero deicide influence. Damon may have been interested in the deicide demos but as stated no impression on the sound of BW. |
Maybe similarities is the better word, CM/BW always had a sound of their own, of course but there were some bits where I thought "oh this is comparable".
My stuff is still packed after a move so I canīt point out which parts in which songs I mean.
Anyway, bring on the stories - Australia always had tons of killer bands and this is interesting to read! _________________ Oh, what fun we have when we exist.

That's really interesting to know - explains a few "editorial oversights" in hindsight. I was living in NZ at the time (and in high school), so HM was about as good as it got in the Masterton newsagent shop haha. A few articles stuck in my mind - an early Nazxul one, a couple of Sad Ex ones and one with Mick Harris when White Irises Blind or Evanescance came out. Not a total write off - despite championing terrible shit like Eezee or Bladhutah (spelling?), it led my 14 year old self to check out Carcass, Morbid angel, Godflesh, and I somehow picked up cassette versions of Wrath of the tyrant/hordanes land and under a funeral moon. Fuck knows how they found their way into the most provincial town in NZ, but that was the highlight of my month, saving up $20 to buy a tape haha. _________________ "14 words: we must secure the depravation of the children and ruin the whole fucking world..." |

What was the beef with HM and Daniel? For ages their was always Extreme Aggression / MIM ads in the magazine.
I think Hot Metal (for the time and place) was a decent magazine. Look at the other US mags from the same period, we could have ended up with a version of Circus or the ilk. Who was the bloke who wrote the 'Streetcleaner' segment? |
