It seems like in the past, the sub-genres of extreme metal get popular (well for metal that is) with certain bands or events. I think for Death Metal it was Cannibal Corpse with their hit jingle "Hammer Smashed Face" and it didnt hurt that the song was in Ace Ventura. For Black Metal I would say that it was Century Media bringing Emperor's ITNE to the US. What band do you think is gonna bring the masses to black/death?
My guess is Witchrist. I think of all the black/death bands they have the most accessible sound (though still raw as fuck), they get across the board positive reviews, they are on a decent sized label with good promotion.
