It's not even really an issue right now since I'm sure these aren't really enjoyable to listen to anyways. Anything like this is going to be pretty crappy while people experiment, but the fact that it actually works at all is what is impressive.
I know the technology has been around for a while, but we also had cell phones in the 80's. The technology will continue to improve, and it's uses will change as the parameters of what it can do change. These things can produce delicate and specialized components now, and with access to a 3D printer and the right files, you'll be able to easily obtain many otherwise hard to obtain parts and equipment.
This also kind of makes the whole intellectual property issue about more than movies, music and similar things. Now you'll be able to copy physical objects, upload them online, and have people download them and print them out. Back to records, at some point you will probably be able to print out a pirated vinyl record, and not just MP3's.
Then there's the whole being able to print out a gun thing.

Haha, can you imagine the whole music pirating discussion over and over again but this time for freaking cars, coffee machines and whatnot? "It's not stealing because I'm not taking away the original product!"
That said, yes, 3D printing is a highly impressive development. I ordered a necklace for a friend from shapeways a while ago (a website where you can upload 3D designs and have them printed in a number of materials) and it was made from some sort of metal/bronze and the quality was surprisingly high. Makes me wonder what the future holds.

Never seen anything cut records for $30. Lathe cuts i've wanted to try, but the barrier cost of entry and the maintenance cost (new needles) kept me out of this thing. The few people who do offer lathe cut records also are a bit pricey because of the time it takes to make them. A run of 50-100 almost runs into the territory of pressing flexis through pirates press or even further your own vinyl record from a plant for 300-500 copies) that it seems better to go those routes unless you have some record where a lathe cut is more beneficial. |

Chalk it up to good ol' Americunt laziness on my part. Not to derail the thread, but the possibility of printing a gun made of some kind of non-metallic polymer makes me doubt that this will ever see the civilian market except for in an extremely neutered form.

About as good as a solid block of material, in the 3D shape of a gun.
(It is doubtful this 3D printer makes moving internal functioning parts) |

I read something about a 3-D printer manufactor who refused to sell their equipment to someone with plans to make a handgun or they called the guy after selling/delivering to him & sent guys to retrieve it- it was in the contract that they could do that but I can't find the link at the moment.
