Give this technology another five years or less and ebay will be flooded with "private pressings/fanclub editions" of most black metal albums out there. _________________ Thread derailed

$250,000 for the 3d printer to produce Edison gramaphone quality records. Seems like a fail to me.
This kind of effort should be put into modern manufacture of new, real vinyl pressing equipment. No one has been making new cutting lathes since the 80s for example.
Imagine a scaled down, home version of a proper lacquer lathe and stamper! I'd bet working that out would take less energy and the resulting equipment for the end user, once it was commercially available, would be must less costly. _________________

The thing with 3D printers are that they are far more versatile than a specialized machine. At least, the technology works and machines do exist, which is a good sign for the future. _________________ Scrutare et vide quia propheta a Galilaea non surgit! |

That'd be cool, but I seriously doubt there will ever be a market big enough to make something like that affordable to the average Joe. Those 3D printers are the shit, sure you'll never produce records with them but just imagine the thousands of objects you'll be able to make on your own without need to buy them in stores. Once the manufacturing costs drop I'm sure you'll find one in every house. _________________ Thread derailed

Ahh.. I thought with a title like "Print your own vinyl at home" and links to a guy making his own records from scratch this discussion was about, you know, making your our records at home. I take it this is the first time you've seen a 3D printer then? We had a FDM rapid prototyper in my CAD school days. This is more advanced obv. but that was 17 years ago already. _________________

you can buy cutting lathes for private use since years. Obviously they aren't cheap, the cheapest one is around $5000 but you will be able to cut your own records at a very high standard. They are for cutting blank vinyl records, not lacquer foils.
There were also the rek-o-cut lathes in the US back in the 60s/70s and other portable lathes that you can obtain for relatively little money nowadays but obviously they would need a major overhaul and constant maintenance.
You can also get a proper vinyl record cut for about $30. |

found a link for one, holy shit that's cool!:
unfortunately it's a little more expensive @ $9,841.03 usd (9,100CHF)
Still, thats $240,158.97 cheaper than a 3D printer! Bargain!
Also found this one which looks decent, but discontined:
Cheapest price I could find for this one is $12,854.79 usd (£7,999.00)
Cool stuff!

These look like they are for 78s

new road bike or this.... hmm...... (or even a car period for that matter) I guess magnetic or laser duplication will have to do for now. those are still totally sweet/me wants though! _________________ trade-want list/available list- http://www.nwnprod.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=20339 |

What I'm wondering is how durable 3d-printed records are compared to higher grammage vinyl. _________________ In Fear and Flame and Death! |
