Sparrows Working On Watain Tribute
Posted by Chris Harris on December 29, 2012 in New Records, News

This struck me as strange but also somewhat cool.
Dallas-based blackened death metal outfit Sparrows are currently planning a covers album which will honor Watain.

The band has issued an open invitation for acts interested in taking part in the project.

“We are starting the project of recording a Watain Tribute Album,” says the band. “If you are a band, and want to do a cover on the album, we will pay for the time for you to record it, AND give you a copy to use for yourselves.

“Please share this. Any band that can come to the Dallas, Texas area to record is welcome. If you are from out of state and you can afford a trip to Dallas to record, the same applies to you. The song Sparrows are putting on the album is ‘Reaping Death,’ so have that in mind.”

Sparrows asks that interested bands contact them on Facebook.

When I think of tribute records, immediately, bands that are no longer relevant or active come to mind. Watain is very much active; their relevancy could be debated, but that’s why it struck me as odd.

I really like that 8 string guitar that dude is playing. And I like techy, non-I_LOVE_PENIS stuff like Decrepit Birth, but I do not understand this style of metal....

Is Watain really that influential and "classic" enough to have a tribute already?

I mean wouldnt a Dissection Tribute come first? Or does one already exist?

Fuck me sideways, judging by the name I thought it'd be some post rock/black/transcendental band... Turns out it's just as bad, deathcore kids playing "deathened black metal" inspired by Behemoth.

Has anyone already mentioned this? or am I the only one that thinks Watain sounds nothing like Dissection? Not that I am a huge Dissection fan but I still feel its a huge insult to compare anything Watain has done to D's second album. I think I've even heard Erik state that he was not so sure about the comparison.

The inspiration is subtle, but it's there alright.
