Been meaning to check these guys out as I'm a fan of the "genre," so to speak. But I've always been overwhelmed by how much material they have. Best place to start or best album?

Also recommendations on bands similar to: Hetroertzen, Dodsengel, Lvxcaelis, Nightbringer etc.

Hard to give a clear advise, because everything is outstanding. But maybe it won't be bad to grab Theosis and Amenti first, together with Nightbringer and/or Necromantia Split. Soundquality on Leviathan Split is shit, but not the most worse in history.
Furthermore there is a Live LP out since a few weeks, which may give you a small overview, including two Songs from Stutthof era.

Their best works are:
Hermeticism ep
The Ruins of Edom (split w/Nightbringer)
The track from the Split w/Crimson Moon, Shibalba, Akrabu
the second half of Vamacara is pretty excellent
I've heard the newest stuff from the other 4-wat split is good
I wanted to like Amenti, but the damn interlude tracks that sound like cheesy outtakes from Cleopatra ruined it for me

Hermeticism 7" and Vamachara album, I'd say.
And Stutthof - And Cosmos From Ashes To Dust. Bit different style, but still one of the best things Acherontas has done!

Vamachara because is close to Acrimonious's Sunyata in riffage/vocals and is less generic and a grower after enough spins. the rest of albums are a blend of experimental melodic/symphonic bm with too much keys, plastic dissonant~harmonic~occult atmosphere, the kind nuclear blast would sign. if this is your thing start with any.

Each album have something different to listen and i think must have it all.
Personally i like most ''Theosis'', this album inspired many bands in Greece, or many others copied Acherontas music, ideology and image.
But be patience cause their new album(out next month) is a really awesome release and their best for me, so far;)

This!

Acherontas never did much for me and of everything I heard of them Vamachara was definitely an enjoyable listen I'll return to sometime soon.

All you need is STUTTHOF - And Cosmos from Ashes to Dust

This band is ACHERONTAS' predecessor.

That's not ALL you need, but you certainly need to have this as well! It is a real masterpiece. Simple and straight-forward, yes, but the atmosphere is just magical. Wampyric Metamorphosis is probably the best song they've written. Works perfectly live as well, I've seen Acherontas live twice and on both occasions this particular song sent really massive chills down my spine.

But when speaking strictly about the discography of Acherontas, also my vote goes to Vamachara. The album is great throughout but songs like Beyond the Mazeways to Ophidian Gnosis seem to resonate with me the most. It still gives me goosebumps even though I've listened to it countless times.

Amenti wasn't as great as Vamachara but it still is a good album and definitely worth checking out. I have high hopes for the new album and will most certainly pick it up once it's out!

I think you're right.
