I've lately been rediscovering a lot of long forgotten albums from this weird, transitional period of Black Metal. It was clearly a time when the symphonic sound reigned supreme, and I'll be the first to admit that the majority of recordings released during those years, probably need heavy dose of nostalgia to be enjoyed. Even the classics like Emperor's Anthems doesn't seem to resonate much with today's younger fans. I will however say that I kind of miss the kitsch that dominated the scene back then. Everything seems so aestherically perfect today that it sometimes takes the fun out of being a Metal fan. Could you imagine a Black Metal album being released with a cover looking like Ragnarok's Nattferd these days? Probably not, and some might argue that it's a good thing and they are probably right and shouldn't bother with this thread...

Anyway I've lately been listening to Obtained Eslavement's Witchcraft, Abigor's Nachthymnen and earlier gave Old Man's Child's Born of The Flickering a spin. Anyone else who still listens to shit like this?

Not really.

Edit: But seriously, that whole period came basically right before i started listening to metal. It, more than anything kept me away from black metal for a very long time.

Probably the weakest period ever for extreme metal, every band just had to have that horrible synth mixed higher than the guitars jammed into their music. I can't count more than a dozen decent albums from those years.

First three Ragnarok, first two Obtained Enslavement, some Cradle of Filth (yeah Werewolf, go ahead), those two Bestial Warlust records and a couple more. The second Abigor wasnt too shabby either. It was a very good moment for power metal if anything (Gamma Ray's Somewhere out in space, Blind Guardian's epic Nightfall, Helloween's return to form, Rhapsody and several others)

Summoning put out a lot of good shit during this period, as did Graveland, Ildjarn and Sacramentum.

None of those bands ever released anything remotely comparable to the late '80ies/early '90ies in terms of quality. They're decent enough for that period mainly because of the lack of serious contenders, seen as all the big bands had either wimped out or disbanded.

I should add, Gehenna's Malice is by far the best (black) metal album from that period.

Haha, nope. But I also miss this kitsch and agree that it was way more fun back then than now - even though most bands sucked besides Limbonic Art and Gehenna.

What also was very popular is to have CASTLES on the cover:

Direct consequence of that horrible "medieval" trend which was at its apex at the time. I love Satyricon but the impact they had on metal was nothing but atrocious.

Now as you say it:

A total rip-off of early Satyricon/Emperor, but a decent one.

Other popular topics from that time: Vampyrism, Tolkien, Vikings.

I struggled to contribute positively as this is definitely an era where even decent bands took a complete nosedive... for me, Rebel Extravaganza comes to mind for example... maybe bands like Taake (now mostly a disgrace) were still good during this era? I can still appreciate Nattestid
