Wow I just bothered reading about 3/4ths of the pages on this thread... and I now feel stupider because of it. There are some ignorant mother fuckers on here that's for damn sure. After reading things like "black sabbath is'nt metal" motorhead don't consider themselves metal" and the infamous "mayhem was the first black metal band" I don't know where the fuck to begin... you people are jokes.
Here's some facts to learn:
1. Venom = started black metal.
2. Motorhead invented the term speed metal and that's what they consider their style. (And yes they are rock'n'roll as fuck, and for anyone who doesn't understand that true metal IS rock'n'roll can "leave the hall!" Haha!)
3. Black sabbath is metal, wow do I even have to say that?
4. there were PLENTY of bands before mayhem playing the established MUSICAL STYLE of black metal
5. There is a such thing as 80's black metal
6. Blasphemy owns darkthrone, burzum, thorns, emperor, and all that panzy trendy shit.
7. Fuck you!
8. And fuck norway!

The genre is a continuum, waves are reference points which last a decade by the looks of things. No one 'started' black metal, it emerged out of various origins (including Venom) and was given a name by Venom. Very simple explanation.

Venom clearly present themselves as a black metal outfit, regardless of their self-classification. Not just from a musical standpoint (dirty, blasphemous, speedy rock 'n' roll), but also by their careless, damming attitude.
The essence is all their, in my opinion.
To me it is that simple. |

My post was meant to be off-topic as this thread has reached mind-melting stupidity levels. I had an Ildjarn song in my head and just posted what I was thinking, forgetting that some people regard Norse black metal as faggotry and are taking the "Venom side". Apologies to all concerned.
