Maybe they only played rock'n roll, but look at the timeline and the attitude. And look at the (proto-)Thrash, Death & Black Metal bands that covered Venom songs, they are all under the influence.

Of course ALL OF THEM were influenced by Venom. It's also not that this is a secret where you have to scroll through obscure 80ies zines to find the proof.

"Hmmm, no, Black Sabbath is fucking overrated, they did not invent Heavy Metal. It was Metallica of course." Rolling Eyes

Is this the elementary school of Metal here? Thought you have to be over 12 to post here. Hope you guys are already able to bind your shoelaces on your own.

Of course, Venom were the first BM band and invented music, imagery and all the rest belonging to it. I am not even discussing this.

But there's always this minority that pretends otherwise, because they are simply TOO GAY for Venom.

+1

The raw, dense, organic, static haze which reverberates throughout "Welcome to Hell" and "Black Metal" indubitably makes Venom progenitors of black metal. As unrefined as their sound and imagery - of course! - yet were, they laid foundations that are still regarded as typal in black metal, even though other bands may be regarded as more pivotal in shaping the genre's sound.

Venom was a poor quality thrash/punk band. They found the name. That's all.

Third Bathory album & first Mayhem EP.

Not everything follows a linear, progressive pattern, you know. That being said, who gives a fuck?

Also, Venom > life.

Laughing

Thrash was not even invented when first two Venom came out. And "Deathcrush" wasn't influential at all when it was released, just some raw and primitive underground Death Metal that needed the life of two bandmembers to gain some wider attention.

Exactly. I'm by no means the greatest Venom fan in the universe but to deny their influence and impact on metal in terms of visuals and music is just dumb, let alone claim Norwegians invented that genre. Well the thread starter is already known for that ridiculous "Is punk darkthrone better than metal darkthrone??" discussion so expecting him to come up with smart polls is definitely hopeless.

Now I know what the problem is, it's because Venom weren't real satanists!

Bullshit as usual from you NK7. Just look around and wash your ears and you will see and hear that the majority of black metal bands is way more influenced by Mayhem than by Venom, be it musical or visual.
Venom may have found the name and dealt with Satan ( aswell as 1000 others had satanic lyrics at that time (just look at all the hippie bands) but Mayhem started all that what is nowadays known as black metal.

But what to expect from a 40+ expert that never understood the music he is fighting...

It didn't "100%" start in Scandinavia, but 90% of that so-called first wave wasn't anywhere near black metal. 80's obscure, satanic lyrcs speed/raw thrash/proto death metal =/= black metal. Especially Venom, they're NWOBHM/speed. Or Mercyful Fate, their actual influence on black metal is microscopical part of what its hyped for.

If you think 'Black Metal' started black metal because of the name, you should be put in a chest and thrown into the ocean.

Most of the people who get pissed when somebody says Venom isn't black metal, or people who think there was a better scene then early Norway, are fucking dickless bat shits anyway.
