Back in the days we used to call this "hard rock". But I guess we had no clue at all. |
We used to call them Heavy Metal. Hard Rock came from 70's bands like Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, etc. |

This is the worst drawback of 80's French Metal IMO, along with some shameful lyrics -later SORTILÈGE comes to mind. It worked only in a few cases like BLASPHÈME and PONCE PILATE, though.
I don't know if 80's SCORPIONS fall into this category, but Love at First Sting is a fave of mine.

its hard as fuck to write an "earworm" song - something that will stick in your head because of the hook and chord progression. Let alone to do that and actually say something with a shred of artistic integrity.
I'm not interested in defending my cult cred enough to the point where I dont say that something like "a day in the life" is a magnificent achievement because it combines really clever chord changes, interesting and totally innovative at the time production techniques with lyrics that were totally in-and-of their time. |

Excess' Melting Point is one of my favorite 80s metal records, and it sounds incredibly of the 80s. It's pretty melodic and definitely has a hard rock (pop metal?) tinge to it. |

Not Scorpions really. A bit in the 90's with "Wind of Change".
Black Out and Love at First Sting are OK although I prefer early Scorpions. |

I do prefer early SCORPIONS for many reasons, but this period of the band is more like good wine : refined, classy, subtle. Sometimes one needs something more basic yet efficient, like BBQ, simple good beer and a good Metal or HR record. Love at First Sting is great for this!

Balls nothing. Queen had (IMHO) the best frontman in the history of rock music and some seriously heavy songs, particularly on Queen 2.
On topic Scorpions gets my vote. I don't think I'd consider them pop metal until Roth left the band though.
