I've been really digging the atmospheric black metal vibe lately; listening to Aureole, Tardigrada, Paysage d'Hiver, Evilfeast, Xothist.. Etc etc. I suppose I'm kind of really into the Fallen Empire aesthetic as well.

Any other recommendations for other bands/labels to check out?

Nasheim from Sweden are really good. Also, many bands from Quebec make great atmospheric black metal, my favourite so far is Csejthe.

As far as essential goes, it's often best to stick to the classics:

Weakling
Old Emperor
Old Ulver
Old Sorhin
Old Abigor
Setherial - Nord
Blut aus Nord - Ultima Thulée and Memoria Vetusta trilogy.
Godkiller - Rebirth of the Middle Ages
Vinterland

Vemod is by far the best in this style when it comes to new bands. Svartrit, Morkekunst and Midnight Odyssey come to mind as well.

Everybody's definition of "atmospheric" is different, but here are some recent standouts of mine:

EPHEMER
FUNEREAL PRESENCE
GRAV (Swe)
SYTRIS

Thanks for all the great recs! Classics and new stuff, I'm open to hearing more of all of it. Yeah, I suppose 'atmospheric' is such a general term.. I suppose in my mind, ambient and atmospheric are kind of interchangeable. Ill Omen sounds like it could fall into either boat, for example, even though (I think) they're not generally considered/labeled ambient or atmospheric..

All good black metal has a certain atmosphere. The question is; what kind of atmosphere are you after?

So far a lot of great stuff has been mentioned. A few picks of my own:
