Was bored this morning and tallied up the votes. The top 10 so far;

Dead Congregation - Grave of the Archangels
Repugnant - Epitome of Darkness
Teitanblood - Seven Chalices
Necros Christos - Triune Impurity Rites
Bolt Thrower - Those Once Loyal
Excoriate - On Pestilent Winds
Immolation - Close To A World Below
Antediluvian - Through the Cervix of Hawaah
Disma - Towards The Megalith
Arghoslent - Incorrigible Bigotry

Personally, I find Necros Christos and Immolation boring as hell, but what do I know...

Did you count from the 1st pages? I almost got it all but there HAS TO be VERMINOUS in that list.

Verminous - Impious Sacrilege got 5 votes. I only counted cases where the albums were explicitly called out - in other words if someone was lazy and just said all of Nile albums, I did not count this even as a single vote.

Can't argue with anything posted here; it's really been a great 17 years for death metal. I will however single out one album that's been mentioned once or twice, Domains' Sinister Ceremonies, which quickly became not just one of my faves of the 2000s onward, but of all time.

For those who may not have checked it out, it sort of has the overall vibe and approach of early Morbid Angel, but is way more musical than anything Trey has written (this is coming from someone who thinks Blessed are the Sick is the greatest dm album ever with Altars of Madness not far behind). I wonder if the people behind the band don't have some kind of classical training because the songs are written and arranged in a way that comes off as very "symphonic" -- but not in the sense of "conventional metal + keyboards": there are contrasting themes in each song that sort of build on each other, battle back and forth, and resolve together, and you can hear those themes moving through various riffing styles just as they would get passed between sections of an orchestra. It never sounds like something that would get a tag like "symphonic death metal" though -- in fact it sometimes reminds me of Belphegor at their best, but do I ever need to stress that Domains is about a gazillion times better than Belphegor (who I do like here and there).

The leads are outstanding; the production, aside from some somewhat timid drums, is absolutely drenched in a perfect occult atmosphere; and every song is memorable. I know this album has gotten a good amount of attention as it is, but it could always stand to get more.

(I should add that it's not as twisted or heavy as stuff like Swallowed or Disma or Impetuous Ritual; it has more of a triumphant feel. Hell some of the riffs are downright jubilant.)

Sorry I've had my evening coffee and started feeling all evangelical about this great Spanish band.

Also I've forgotten if Begrime Exemious' Visions of the Scourge got mentioned - it probably did - but that thing fucking slays too.

Blood Urn - Of Gory Sorcery & Death
Witchrist - The Grand Tormentor
Desecresy - Chasmic Transendence

It would require a lot of time and listening to figure out 10 albums.
