I've noticed it is becoming more and more common, at least in my experience, to receive brand new LP's scratched, scuffed, or warped. Not just light surface scratches, but scratches that affect play (loud pops). In the past month I have recieved 4 LP's, some fresh out shrink wrap with big, noticable scratches. Its really annoying. Has anyone else noticed this or had this problem?

Yes, warped, scratched, stuff stuck to the surface all sorts really, luckily only a small percentage, this has always been the case in recent times.
Usually I just put up with it unless the record is unlistenable.

Never nothing really serious, besides some surface scratches.
Your experiences are the consequences of the recent Vinyl production. Fast-food treatment.

Also the new Vinyl records come full of static electricity.

Yep, most recent instance was my reissue copy of Haxan, which had some scuffs mainly on the first track of side a from moving around in the sleeve during shipping. When I played the record it sounded fine so no big deal, but it does suck.

As much as I love listening to vinyl these kinds of issues are why I tend to buy CDs mostly.

I'd actually say the percentage of cd's I would get that are already scratched are higher than records. Probably has a lot to do with many labels sending cd's without jewel cases to keep costs down (which I totally understand). Remember that whatever format you buy, it has probably been sent at least 2 times before it is shipped out to you.

Well, I dont mind scratches and what not if they dont affect play, but if it does and I paid for a NEW record, it really bums me out.

Ive been fairly lucky I guess, but I dont buy nearly as many records most on this board. I had one issue though... the absolute LAST die-hard edition of the Adversarial-Antediluvian split available, which was saved for me by CS had a skip on the first song of the Adversarial side. There was absolutely no visible damage, and the wood glue trick didnt work so I assumed it was an imperfection in the manufacturing. I didnt have the heart to complain, not like it would have gotten me anywhere anyway. All it would have done is saddled CS with an unsellable record through no fault of his own. So I did a little digging and found a way to potentially fix it....and it worked!

You need to practice on shitty LPs you dont care about first, but what you do is very lightly place your finger on the cartridge as it crosses the bump and get it down to the millisecond timingwise. As it crosses the bump you push lightly to bore it out. Its risky potentially, but realistically if the song is unlistenable as is then there is nothing to lose by trying.

And specially for records that were shrinkwrapped. Meaning that the crap originates from the pressing plant. One LP on the Nehëmah boxset had quite large and very visible scratch on it and caused a pop every time the needle went past it.

Apparently these guys can operate 60 year old machines perfectly fine, but setting up a proper particle extraction system is beyond them. Fucking gay.

Don't know about you guys but my copy of Nightbringer / Dødsengel lp sounds really shitty. All the high-volume parts (=almost the whole record) has this weird distortion on background. I was thinking about needle problems but I listened to it at a friend after spinning it on my player twice and the problem persisted.. Nothing visible on the surface.

There was similiar type case with Behexen "My Soul..." LP. A lot of new LP's have some dirt/crap on the grooves as default, and it causes them to sound bad. If possible, it is recommended to wash the LP first before playing it. I would do it if I'd had a record washer like my friend has.

Actually I have that problem on that album too! And I was thinking about needle issues back then also.

I recall Caverns - s/t 7" being so bent that the record was unlistenable.

I've had a similar problem with the Impetuous Ritual LP, only the opposite. It got really distorted and crackly during the really low end parts. I also thought it was needle problems. I decided to just get a new copy because I thought maybe it could have just been a defective LP, but the same problem was present on the new copy.

I recall the whole batch was like that? Washing didn't work, I tried. The record sounds totally unplayable. Shame really because I think it's the best Behexen record to date.
