Recently, some of my non metal friends were asking about the differences between death and black metal and I was playing some songs as examples for them, and it got me thinking: what song or album perfectly defines a genre for you. I think it would be fun to make a playlist of the following genres, with one song for each:

Death Metal
Black Metal
Grindcore
Powerviolence
Sludge
Stoner Metal
Power Metal
Doom
Funeral Doom
Folk Metal
Thrash
War Metal
Bestial

Obviously some of these genres can be broken down to even smaller genres, but let's keep it simple.

well this is not what i think is best or most genre defining but if i was to explain the differances for non-metal people i'd go with:

Death Metal - Cannibal Corpse, Shredded humans
Black Metal - Darkthrone, Transylvanian hunger
Grindcore - Napalm Death, anything off Scum
Sludge - Eyehategod, Kill your boss
Thrash - Metallica, Fight fire with fire

Mayhem - DMDS defines black metal.
Black Sabbath - Volume 4 defines doom
Possessed/Death - Scream + Seven Churches define death metal

DMDS was what I thought of first for black metal, but the vocals are so different from the majority of black metal that it wouldn't be my choice.

The more pertinent question would be: Do they make your iPhone melt in your hand?
