And Anthropophagus only has 2 or 3 good scenes anyway. Buio Omega is way better. |

The New French Extremity Movement is a breath of fresh air to the tired, stale, and repetitive horror movie genre of today. Martyrs is the only movie I can compare to Hellraiser II, and that's quite a big feat. |
Martyrs fucking sucks. Dumb as hell, and I had high expectations for it based on what people told me. Just cheap torture porn. Gaspar Noé is better but still extremely overrated. I stand alone is pretty grim but after watching it twice I dont think I will ever watch it again, the whole gun-shot sound effect thing and the warning just comes off as a cheesy gimmick.
If you like New French Extremism Michael Haneke is where it's at 110%. The Piano Teacher is a brutal and heavy movie and a lot more dark and emotionally scarring than any of the films you listed above. Granted it's not a "horror" movie, but still puts more or less the rest of New French Extremism to total shame. Caché is also definitely worth seeing, twisted and fantastic film.
Haneke aside, to me the movement is sort of cheap bullshit. Pretentious films that don't deliver.
(p.s. I am aware Haneke is Austrian but since he makes almost all his films in France these days, from what I understand he was at one point associated with the movement) _________________ Wants/Trades: http://www.nwnprod.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=275935#275935

While Haneke is brutally overrated by the artsy-fartsy cinephilistrians, to lump him with total crap like "Baise-Moi" in that pseudo-category "New French Extremism" is complete bullshit.
And "The Piano Teacher" is basically one thing: EXTREMELY boring. |

well if you like your films paced like advertisements and music videos, Hollywood will always be there to satisfy less refined tastes.
anyhow, I agree that New French Extremism is a bullshit "category" _________________ Wants/Trades: http://www.nwnprod.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=275935#275935

There's still a wide range for "more refined tastes" between Hollywood and Haneke.
"Baise-Moi" is not even a real movie, it's a bad porno with a stolen plot.
And if you like Haneke, then check the movies of fellow-Austrian Ulrich Seidl, for example "Hundstage". Also very depressing (if you like to get depressed while watching a movie). |

obviously you're right, I was just giving a knee-jerk response. I am not actually a massive Haneke fan, I think Amour is the best film he has done. If we're talking all time favorites, I have to go with Ingmar Bergman, Orson Welles and Roman Polanski.
I am not familiar with Seidl, but he looks really interesting I will check him out. Thanks for the recommendation. _________________ Wants/Trades: http://www.nwnprod.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=275935#275935

You're welcome, Seidl is more on the realistic side IMHO. A bit more social study there.
As for Haneke: He is surely not a bad director, but he lost it a bit for me with that completely commercial-aimed and unnecessary remake of "Funny Games". An intelligent movie to begin with (I once read he wanted to show how violence is uncomfortable to watch as a contrast to the Tarantino-movies), so no need to remake. |

I find it funny and strange that the high bar he compares Martyrs with is Hellraiser II. Sure, it's the best of the sequels but it's not like it's saying much. I thought it's the typical sequel that pretty much misses everything that made the first one work. Then it came Hellraiser III and really fucked things up.
I can only think of one saga where going further away from its original premise with each new installment actually works in favor of the franchise and that is the Death Wish movies. |

agreed completely. even the original funny games struck me as a bit juvenile, even if the concept was really interesting. I think he has gotten a lot better from Caché onwards, the stupid remake aside of course. But that was a huge disappointment, and he obviously just did it because they threw money at him. Funny Games did not at all need to be remade, it was a total waste. _________________ Wants/Trades: http://www.nwnprod.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=275935#275935

A lot will disagree here, but for me it also worked with the First Blood franchise. Not that every sequel was as good as the first one, but every part has it's own quality and stands well for itself.
And what about Indiana Jones? Ok, let's ignore the last one, but part III actually topped part I. And "Temple of Doom" is better than most say. |

In the case of Rambo I'll disagree. I thought the first one was good and the other ones not. I actually enjoy a lot more the Rambo rip offs than any of the official sequels.
About Indiana Jones, I don't think any of them went apart from the premise of the first one, except maybe for the last one which was a piece of shit anyway. But all the 3 original ones had the same spirit, I think. There's a continuity in them and you never feel like it's not an Indiana Jones movie anymore. |

I could never understand the point of Van Bebber's The Manson Family. So he just basically refilmed all of the scenes from Robert Hendrickson's Manson, only with actors? Why? I really liked Deadbeat at Dawn, but The Manson Family was totally pointless and masturbatory. Sure, he added in the embarrassing bumpers of nowadays Manson followers and filmed the murder sequences but they were pretty tame for the most part, he even shyed away from showing Sharon Tate getting stabbed since she was pregnant. It's just a shameless ripoff...
If someone told me Rob Zombie filmed this, I wouldn't be surprised.
I guess this is a director that metalheads are just supposed to worship? |
I wasn't aware that metalheads were supposed to like Van Bebbers films. While "The Manson Family" is somewhat derivative I thought it was done well with the exception of the lame bumpers you referred to. Definitely not in the same league as "Deadbeat at Dawn" or "My Sweet Satan" though.
Over the weekend I saw Brandon Cronenberg's debut "Antiviral." Very much like his fathers early biological horror films so I enjoyed it. Decent acting and very cool cinematography and sets. _________________ Slackmovies - My lame movie blog! |

I though Daniel Craig had signed on for three more films?
That is why i said the sequels would be strange, because in Skyfall everybody is telling Bond "It's a young man's game" and he's too old etc. |
I can't find anything concrete , beyond some mention that Craig is "believed" to have a contract for "at least 2" more Bond films.
But yeah, that's strange because like you mentioned, they make quite a big deal in Skyfall about his age and missing a few steps.... |
