Only God Forgives- pretty good. Slow start, but worth sticking with for the great gore effects and surreal mood.

What was this supposed to be - a piece of art?
Garbage.

Definitely supposed to be art. I loved the visuals and mood myself and found that enough to keep me watching.

My two cents:
Only God Forgives - painful garbage.
Wanted - painful garbage.
Elysium - pretty much painful garbage as well.
World War z - what can be expected from these folks. Therefore not much of a disappointment.
We're the millers - black cock down, har har. Typical comedy fare.
The family - I had to turn it off. Torturous garbage. Some actors (in this case de Niro) must be really desperate.
Evil Dead remake - As expected: garbage
Riddick 2013 - strange, I've seen this before. But it was more fun back then.
Man called horse - okay.
Prisoners - That main character sure was an unlikeable asshole. Ran for much too long, got annoying but still somewhat better than the other garbage I've watched.
Hummingbird - Statham in a drama movie? Garbage.
The purge - Out of the whole lot most likely the best. Doesn't say much though. Liked the premise but sadly more or less turned into just another home invasion movie.

Wow, I've seen at least half those movies and I'd say The Purge is the worst. Though I agree The Family is absolute shit as well. I also had to turn it off. I can't fucking stand movies with 'funny' soundtracks and musical queues like that.

Probably it is more the idea of the movie which won me over. Always had a knack for stuff like this - running man, death race, hunger games - Bread and circuses kind of stuff.

Running Man is fucking excellent. A horrible movie by any standards of a film connoisseur but what can I say? A classic of ridiculousness.

I thought Prisoners was pretty fucking awesome.

Saw/liked these recently:

Prisoners
Brothers (borderline)
Take Shelter
The Deer Hunter
End of Watch
Dredd
The Place Beyond the Pines

So-so:
The Spectacular Now

Disappointing:
Out of the Furnace

Terrible:
Only God Forgives (fucking awful)

I thought there was some pretty good Lynch moments in Only God Forgives. I probably wouldn't recommend it very often though.

Only God Forgives is for fans of Jordorowsky and Lynch. You could definetly classify it as art-fag cinema. I just happen to like a good bit of art-fag cinema.

I am completely ignorant of Jordorowsky (recommendations on getting started welcome), but I agree with the Lynch mention. I was actually reminded of Kubrick more than anything as I watched the film. The obsession with color and lighting was very apparent.

Definitely art-fag cinema, but one I happened to enjoy after almost turning it off 15 minutes into it.

I Saw The Devil - Disappointed in this one. I felt it was at least an hour too long and became an exercise in tedium after a while. Probably my least favorite Korean "revenge" film that I've seen.

You're crazy. This movie was a straight up 10/10 for me; the story was so engaging I didn't once (out of the couple of times I rewatched it) notice the length.

To each their own I suppose... Wink

Yeah, I don't know what it was about it that bored me. Predictability, I suppose? The wife felt the same way, and we usually both enjoy Asian cinema, especially the crime stuff but this one just fell flat to us. It could also be that I had heard so much praise for it over the last year or so that when I finally sat down to watch it I was expecting more.

I did really enjoy that extra stabby car scene, though!

I've heard that there is an American remake on the way... Rolling Eyes

Trying to get up to speed with all the obvious oscar contenders. Still need to go see Nebraska, American Hustle, Her, and Wolf of Wall Street, and I have Dallas Buyers Club and August-Osage County on my computer currently.

12 Years a Slave was okay, awesome score.
Captain Phillips was subpar, but T. Hanks wasn't a complete pussy.
Gravity was "cool."
Rush actually turned out to be pretty awesome, even for a "sports movie."
Lone Survivor was fucking absurd, it's literally just 2 hours of this:

Prisoners, The World's End, Kings of Summer, and You're Next were my favorites of the year but probably won't be recognized for shit so fuck it \_(ツ)_/

Like many here I agree that The Family was absolute shite, and I too had to turn it off. So very bad.

Kill List ( Again! Love it)

Prisoners- I thought this was pretty decent.

I watched Watership Down after years and years, just to see if it was un-child friendly as I remember it being when I watched it as a child..It was ok!

Tempted to watch Only god forgives again.

Talking of Alejandro Jodorowsky; I've only seen The Holy Mountain and Santa Sangre and both are deserving of a second viewing..!

Holy Mountain and Sante Sangre come highly recommended, as does El Topo.
