Hopefully I'm not overstepping my boundaries with this thread but I couldn't fine my answer elsewhere.

Recently I bought a mini tape deck to transfer my endless tapes known to mp3s. I downloaded audacity to convert them. After I replay the music most of the music sounds mono. I looked around and redid my settings on audacity and used the amplified function to clean it up. The mono sound was improved but the music sounded muddy.

So my question is, I don't know shit about decibels or anything recording music releated, what would be a good setting so the music is more bare able to listen to after transferred over? Like what decibels or settings would be at best to be set at so the final product can be almost a superior sound or close to it?

Thanks in advance.

can you plug something else in to test the recording? for example a CD player
you need to isolate the problem; it could be the medium, the soundcard, or the software

if you plug something else in, and the problem persists, you know that it's isolated to the hardware+software, and you can take the cassette out of the equation

also can you adjust the recording volume somewhere?

What kind of output is it on the tape deck? It could be shrinking it down to mono right at the source

There seems to be two volume functions on audacity. A microphone volume and the regular volume. I turn off the microphone settings because I believe that's used more to record your voice on the spot.

But I will look into plugging my CD player in the double check for any issues. I might just have to upgrade my sound card, it's been awhile since I did that.

There's only play, stop, rewind, fast forward, direction, and play mode. Nothing for output.

are you going from a headphone output jack to a line-in input jack? If so, the problem may be with the cable. Make sure it's pushed in all the way, which sounds silly, but sometimes they get loose. If it's in all the way, try a different cable.

Also in Audacity, make sure you don't have the audio panned to one side...or mostly to one side. There's a slider on the left with panning options.

make sure it's set to stereo input, not mono.

70 years after the liberation of Auschwitz and suddenly the Blake Judd thread is not 'sticky' anymore.

anyone have any experience with these?
http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss_2?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=cassette+to+mp3

sure, they are useless if you have your own setup, but like a crack whore, the convenience factor contributes greatly

That awful piece of kit has a headphone jack by the looks of it, the green rimmed hole.
Also I might be talking out my arse here but I was told USB cables are too thin to transfer audio very well, especially from an analogue source like cassette [or vinyl]
