I don't think This really fits the topic. Since lots of people would strongly disagree with this list. Slayer, Morbid Angel, Mayhem,Motörhead,Bathory,Darkthrone. You defo did not choose the song considered "best".
Or are these lists supposed to be 100% personal.
But you have some Great songs there. |

It may sound like a Wacken-going-metal-warrior-cliche thing to say, but I think metal is one of the few genres where bands aren't limited to one song of brilliance. Perhaps there are a handful of songs which would rank at the bottom, but most bands have at least an album's worth of material that's earth-shattering. |

true, but having one or more good albums doesn't limit a band of having a single song that still remains miles ahead of all the other (good) ones.
example: Abysmal Grief have yet to make a bad release, but they also still have yet to make a song better than "Hearse"
admitted, this thread should consist of more "obvious-best-songs", but apparantly there aren't that many. _________________ Buy my KVLT: http://www.nwnprod.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=60310

For me, it would have to be (nowadays) Walker of Dissonant Worlds, though Prison of Mirrors was my gateway to DSBM. Always got a soft spot for that one. So bang on, in a manner of speaking. |

I'm going to have to respectfully disagree with you on Abysmal Grief. They have a bunch of top-notch songs which rival Hearse, including the B-side! |

Piledriver - "Witch Hunt"

That these ghost-writing goofs wrote one of the all-time great hard-rocking metal songs is pretty amazing. The main rhythm riff is incredible.
I recorded it off Z-Rock (AM 970 in the Twin Cities if I remember correctly) in the late 80s and played that poor cassette dozens of times till I was able to track the LP down many years later. |

I figure they make overall great releases, with few stand-out songs per se. I still think Hearse is the better song than the B-side, but the whole 7" stands out as the best release by them by any measure (without saying anything negative about their the AB catalogue) _________________ Buy my KVLT: http://www.nwnprod.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=60310

Bölzer - Coronal Mass Ejaculation
Absurd - Germanien Über Alles
Vemod - Venter På Stormene
Ofermod - Chained To Redemption
Paysage D'Hiver - Welt Aus Eis
Arditi - Religion Of The Blood
Midnight - Servant Of No One
Furze - Leizla
Triarii - On Wings Of Steel
Tukaaria - Wrought by it's Creation
Saturnalia Temple - Dreaming Out Of Death
The Funeral Orchestra - Apocalyptic Trance Ritual
Urfaust - Gespinnst Des Verderbens
Thorns - Aerie Descent
Agnes Obel - Riverside
For me these are highlights. They all have many more great songs but I usually skip the rest when im in pro-active listening mode i.e. racing from band to band and genre to genre.
I might be suffering from musical-AD(H)D. While Listening to one song im already figuring out what to listen to next. Or i stop the song dead in its tracks and switch to a wholly different sound or genre.
Anyways, regarding Midnight and Thorns; the ones i mentioned are the only ones i really like and I dont care for the rest of their material. Well maybe Funeral Marches to the Grave and Flag Held High or whatever its called.
The rest....meh! |

Hmm people seem to be confusing "my favourite song by x band" with "a band with one song that is objectively better than all their others".
Like seriously, Bathory and Sodom were one-hit wonders with a definitive "best" song? _________________
