Tiamat and Therion did not always suck ox cock and look like goth retards. Maybe not the best examples, but come up with more "once decent/great underground contenders turned useless shite"

Early Therion and Tiamat are amazing.
Another obvious example would be Samael. Not sure how many would agree with these, but the same can be said for My Dying Bride, Paradise Lost, and Anathema. |
