I was listening to Arghoslent/Martial Barrage "Send Forth the Best ye Breed" (Well, the Arghoslent material anyway) and it had me thinking, are the many releases like this where the other band puts out solid material, while the other is just fucking around with some C-grade bedroom project.

There sure are cases where the contrast between bands is just too much for them to fit together, or the other band simply sucks.

This is also the case with many, if not all tributes, but that's a whole different beast.

Discuss.

Kind of / not really but the Meads / Mayhem split is just weird. I really like both sides but they've really got nothing to do with each other and shouldn't belong on the same release

As bad example, both GBK splits with Nunslaughter and Chemin de Haine. GBK's tracks are so good (specially that four tracker version of The Tricifixion of Swine!) that they overshadow the split partners completely and makes you never want to listen to that other side more than once. Only to realize that it's no good.

Great splits that deserve mention and first come to mind are Weltenfeind, Moonlood/DsO and Horna/Behexen that work as a whole perfectly.

Bad split: Rotting Christ / Negative Plane

That Rotting Christ song is so fucking awful.

Good split: Dead Congregation / Hatespawn

That track from Hatespawn delivers.

The Emperor/Thorns split is a similar situation as described by the OP. The Thorns material is simply brilliant, but the Emperor side is essentially a joke, save the cover of Aerie Descent which is decent enough.

Vlad Tepes/Belketre is an easy example of a good split. Decent amount of material from both bands and both of the utmost quality (although I prefer the VT stuff).

I was listening to the Innsmouth/Mongrel's Cross split today, and it totally delivers. Both songs are of commensurate awesomeness. Also, love the Wither/Worship split I finally got recently, really killer material from both bands even though Worship's track is an instrumental.

The DECEASED / CRUCIFIED MORTALS split. I guess the Crucified Mortals side is alright but I never have the desire to flip to it after the Deceased tracks.

Profanatica / Masacre LP.

Both bands are great, but they are nothing alike. And from interviews, it seems like Ledney didn't even know what Masacre sounded like when it was released (I may be wrong about that, it was a long time ago).

Yeah I was gonna mention this one. The Emperor side is pretty much just Ihsahn dicking around in his home studio. Sad cos it could and should have been a much better release than it turned out.

Wyqm / Moloch - split. Wyqm side is absolute gold but I can't stand the Moloch side at all. Listened to it once and I'm not touching that side again. Funny thing is, I have all three versions of this split (Gold/black, glow-in-the-dark and marble vinyl). Any news on new Wyqm material by the way? I heard a year ago that he had a new full-lenght done but he doesn't have a label to release it.
