Ough,
The only official release to include any of it is "Absolutely Nothing", which includes versions of "German Mustard", "Where I Lead Me", "Nothing" and maybe one more. The tracks are fucking haunting. Townes is in a dark place and it's just heavy, but I also have a handful of recordings that I believe are from that same session that have never been released. They include the last couple songs he ever finished "Old Satan", "Harms Swift Way" and "Townes Blues" as well as some spoken word stuff. The tracks aren't cleaned up or anything they were taken straight from the board. I acquired them in a trade about 5 years ago from a guy I met on a Townes message board. Theres like 3 attempts at "Old Satan" and Townes keeps fucking it up and sounds wasted but I think the 3 takes could probably be cut into one useable track. He kills it on "Harms Swift Way" which is stunning and just heartbreaking and Townes Blues is him at maybe his most bitter.

I actually haven't heard this but I'm def going to track it down, also would love to hear that stuff you got in a trade if you could PM me....

I dont know if you read but his long time road manager and one of his best friends Harold Eggers just released his Book "My Years With Townes Van Zandt". Its a great book.

I just ordered it actually. A friend of mine got to hear Eggers speak on the book in Austin, unfortunately I was out of town! I'm also going to pick up the Blaze Foley book, as I heard there's a good bit about Townes in it, but also love Blaze himself.

Picked up Colter Wall's Songs of the plains yesterday. Beautiful record!

An artist that also needs to be mentioned, although it's not really country, is Jackson C. Frank. Tragic guy with one incredible album.

I know it's a country-pop album but I am listening to "Golden Hour" by Kacey Musgraves. As a person who grew up in the south, this is very Dolly Parton era country and an excellent album of country with some pop influence.

Yo I feel this. I have a friend who listed this as one of their top albums of last year and I was way skeptical, even though this person has impeccable taste, and after a while I warmed up to it a lot.

I think it hadn’t dawned on me yet that good pop country might be coming around again. It also took me a minute to realize the greatness of Sturgill Simpson almost for the same reason, even tho he’s not pop country but definitely able to blur into a little mainstream success and sound.

Sturgill's solo records have been hit or miss for me, I dug the first 2 alot but didn't care much for the last one other than a couple songs. However, his old band SUNDAY VALLEY was the greatest thing ever. They only dropped 2 CDs, both indecently, but both are amazing. It's like a mix of Country, Southern Rock, and Bluegrass but so intense and great. He actually butchered an old SV song on his newest solo album "Oh Sarah", orignal is a million times better.

Glad to see positive remarks on Kacey's album on here. It's a perfect record from start to finish. If seeking it out on vinyl, make sure you get the European version. Stateside one leaves a bit to be desired.

Not sure if many people here know of Luke Winslow-King and Esther Rose, both solo country musicians who often pair up and do a great old school up-beat country/ragtime thing that captures a great atmosphere.

If you prefer things a little (ie much) darker and more depressing, this guy from Nashville is unmatched in the genre.

Anyone fuck with Emmylou Harris - Wrecking Ball? Been jamming that one again quite a bit lately to burn out the ends of winter.

I wanna shed a little light on local Austin artist Erika Wennerstrom's killer country rock / alt-country / folk album from 2018, Sweet Unknown. This particular version of "Extraordinary Love" kills me every time I watch it:

Wrecking Ball and Red Dirt Girl are both great records. I recall there being some really good live/TV performances from the WB era on youtube too.

Her older albums can be pretty spotty but if I had to pick, this is probably my all time favorite song from her:

Got turned onto this fairly recently through the compilation pictured on the youtube video. The record this track is from smokes front to back (and was somehow only issued in the UK?) but this song in particular is addicting.

Anyone else see the Blaze Foley movie that came out last year? Watched it a few days ago. Pretty enjoyable to be honest.
