I will say that the pedal, whatever it is, might sound great with one amp but like shit for another. My Metal Muff sounds great with a Mesa but when used with a 6505+ it makes the lead channel sound like shit.

I really like the sound of Metal Muff with the top boost, which mesa amp do you have?

All you need is the MT-2 Metal Zone or an Ibanez TS-9 if you're wanting to use the pedal as an overdrive for a tube amp. Both work great for black/death metal on my Mesa triple rec.

Really depends on the exact type of sound you are after and the amp you have.

BOSS SUPER OVERDRIVE(the yellow one)... level maxed... tone at 230PM(like a clock)... gain at 9AM... triple rectifier, presence maxed, bass at 1230pm, mids at 2pm, highs at 1pm...orange channel, amp gain at 1pm.... been working like a charm for near 20 years...

you cant actually answer that question.I mean i can tell you what I THINK is a good pedal-but i assure you EVERYONE who has a recommendation has done so by years of trial and error.

See if your local music store will let you try out a bunch of stuff with your rig at volume,in a band situation.FWIW i think the metal muff is one of the worst distortions ever...I get a better sound from my cheap chinese OCD clone for MY TASTES.

yes i'm labouring the point but your question is vague as hell, unless you are after a generic sound?

Anything will work if you fuck with it enough. I firmly believe that. Just find something you like, generally speaking, by listening to YouTube clips after you know your price range. No one is going to be playing Blasphemy or Mutiilation riffs, so keep that in mind. Just don't buy a fuzz pedal, unless you are going for two-note-chord, slower, no-boost type stuff. Fuzz will work if you have something in front of it, but it's a good idea to avoid it unless you're going for that.

After 15 years of playing guitar, I've found that the Metal Zone works best for me combined with a Marshall half stack and a Les Paul or Ibanez RG. Of course not everyone likes the Metal Zone but it gives me a good black metal sound.

But also keep in mind that I'm not writing kvlt shit but the rule for me is anything goes when it comes to my composing.

You're better off just buying a good 2 channel head, although pedals are good for layering once you get accustomed to adding different tones.

So what kind of equipment do you have and what sound are you looking for? If you have a hi-gain head like a 5150, modern Marshall, ENGL or the equivalent there is really no need for a distortion pedal but you may what to use a Maxon OD-808 to tighten up the sound. The Maxon/Ibanez OD-808 is really great. It can be used with old British tube amps resulting in excellent crunch or with modern hi-gain amps to tighten them up.
