Going to Croatia for two weeks. Riding a boat down the coast from Zadar to Dubrovnik making stops along the way. Ending the trip with a couple nights in Zagreb before we fly out.

I am having a shit time looking stuff online.

Any recommendations on record stores, music clubs, general attractions? Unfortunately, I just miss Iron Maiden coming around.

Croatia is a great country. If you like wine you should try some of the 2 billion local brands.
And in Dubrovnik, be sure to wander around, you'll have a hard time finding a more beautiful city.

I visited Zadar earlier this year. It is a quiet place, and I really enjoy that sort of thing. Summer over there is supposed to be madness!

Funny, a bunch of us had planned on going to Croatia during Burning Sea to see King Diamond on the beach, but the promoters cancelled the fest and the trip fell through (we switched plans to Prague). All I can say is from my few weeks researching it, get one of those giant pizzas and this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plitvice_Lakes_National_Park.

In Zagreb you can visit metal bar ''Valhalla''(ex Runa),the only real metal bar in Croatia and it is only 15 minutes away by foot from the Zagreb's main square. There you can listen everything from heavy, thrash, black, death, grind etc. -mostly old school and lots of underground metal too.
And just to mention a few bands that you can hear it in bar-Bathory,Hellhammer/Celtic Frost,Sodom,Beherit,Blasphemy,Repulsion,Darkthrone,Sarcofago,Venom,Burzum,Bolt Thrower,Autopsy,NunSlaughter,Brutal Truth,Dark Angel,Emperor,Archgoat,Impaled Nazarene,Massacre,Incantation,Immolation,Proclamation and many many more...you can even bring your own music there and the owner will be glad to play it for you if you ask him.

You must visit "Mirogoj" graveyard in Zagreb. It's really fuckin huge and beautiful. It's like some Pantheon.

Some pics:

Even better is this:

Quote:
Ustaše problem with the Nazi ideology was that the Croats are Slavs and were considered inferior by Nazi standards. Ustaše ideology thus created a theory about a pseudo-Gothic origin of the Croats in order to raise their standing on the Aryan ladder.

Reminds me a bit of Rob Darken's "Celtic-Slavonic" Aryan heritage.

But one thing is for sure: In terms of cruelty and barbarism, the Ustasha topped their masters by FAR. These guys were bloodthirsty butchers.
