Quite a lengthy and recent article on vinyl albums making a huge return after decline. This trend seems mirrored by the underground metal scene too from general observation. However, vinyl singles seem to have dropped over the past few years in more mainstream music.
Stats from the article are below and for the UK only, though I imagine this data can be extrapolated worldwide.
Vinyl sales in the UK
Albums
2008 - £1.1m
2009 - £2.8m
2010 - £3.1m
2011 - £3.4m
2012 - £5.7m
Singles
2008 - £2.2m
2009 - £2.5m
2010 - £1.3m
2011 - £0.9m
2012 - £0.9m

Nice to read the DJ Jazzy Jeff from The Fresh Price of Bel Air has a collection of "tens of thousands" of vinyls. Maybe that's why he never seemed to fight back when Uncle Phil would throw him out the front door..... he just went home and spun records. |

Cool stuff.
I'd like to see a USA version of the article.
I figured vinyl singles (7"s) were totally more of a HC/Punk/Metal/Indie thing at this point.
Nice to see that many Pop releases from major artists get a vinyl release as well. _________________ We Are Satan's Generation And We Don't Give A Fuck! |

"Nothing beats vinyl, aside from maybe reel to reel tape." In fact, Nickerson refuses to compare these formats to the digital files stored on your MP3 player. "Its like comparing Daniel Day-Lewis to Stephen Baldwin."

My question is: What happens when technology catches up to capture or mimic that vinyl sound? |

I have a feeling the decline in vinyl single sales are due to most vinyl singles going to DJs to play in clubs, and they seem to be adopting digital technology a lot more these days so the main market for these has gone _________________ Ignivomous merch: abaddon_963[at]hotmail.com

7"s are getting more and more expensive to produce. People generally don't want to pay more than $5-$7 for a 7". _________________ Your opinion is as insignificant as your existence.

"However, he adds, "the irony of the recent influx of major label reissues on vinyl is that they are so expensive they alienate those who would really be able to appreciate them in the first place,
"I mean, it's $30-$40 for an LP reissue in the stores now. The working-class, struggling-through-life guy that the music speaks to has no chance of buying it." He says."
Interesting perspective. Wonder wehat they would make of us, frothing at the mouth with rage because a ultra-limited LP sold out before we can get it. _________________ "14 words: we must secure the depravation of the children and ruin the whole fucking world..." |

if I had to guess with the singles/EPs, it could also have MUCH to do with the fact there is too much work involved for only hearing 1-2 songs per side, then having to turn around and flip, then turn around again and change to the next single/EP. too much involvement!!! reminds me of sending texts/emails on touch screen phones. give me LPs, and key pads please!
not to mention oh so many EPs tend to be tracks that never made the cut for actual full length releases. especially with many splits. songs are often sub par... _________________ trade-want list/available list- http://www.nwnprod.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=20339 |

I suspect that there will be a certain point that growth in vinyl sales will begin to plateau, where all of the "potential" vinyl enthusiasts will have made the leap and bought turntables and stuff. I wonder when that will be, or what kind of sales volume that will look like.
This is a good thing, steady "niche" interest in vinyl means that companies will still make turntables and cartridges, and plants will have enough business to stay open and produce records. Great! |

While the article has a certain "slow news day" feel to it, it's nice to know people are still buying music....
I do see a lot of this audiophile vinyl $50 per lp shit, but I also see a lot of lps priced cheaper than a lot of CDs which is how I remember vinyl being in the mid 90s, even though that was a distortion of actual manufacturing costs.... _________________ http://www.last.fm/user/ngadke |
