http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SL-1200

Judging from what Wikipedia says, the newer models have various improvements and such. I wish I own one of those suckers but in my opinion, I don't think it matters too much which version you get. Since I don't believe you'd use them for DJing and scratching, I would still buy it anyways.

I have a Stanton STR8-30. I got this for free from a guy who basically abandoned all of his possessions but you can get it on ebay for probably around $100. You DO need a pre-amp or mixer to run this but luckily I got mine from the same guy.. and are also available on ebay for less than $20.

i went to one of the distributors of pro-ject today and they said i'd better get a technics sl-1200 other than a pro-ject...

apparently if you buy it only for home listening you have to buy sth. after m3 which has a reset for pitch control, if you buy sth older than that you wont really know if the pitch control is at the zero point exactly or not...

that sounds bullshit, older ones have a detent at the zero point. and even if not, it wouldn't matter because it is most unlikely that the normal speed shown by the strobe is exactly at the zero point.

I have a Technics SL-D2 and another few models (Pioneer, Sony, Yamaha etc..) but the best sound I got from a 30+ year old Thorens TD-160 with an Empire E/3 gold cartridge, you can find those turntables in Ebay for about $150, worth's way better than all the other, tough luck is with shipping though, the plate itself weighs 2.6Kg not to mention the wooden base and the heavy dust shield, but worths every penny.

If you can get a second-hand Technics 1200 for a good price (200-300 US$), do it. They are total work horses, and last forever. And of course the black MK2s are the coolest.

Honestly though, I think most any decent midline turntable is good enough for most metal records. You think Angelcunt is gonna sound different if you get a Sota?! Razz

Yeah, the project is great. I got one about 5 years ago and never looked back. It's fully manual, so you have to take the platter off and change the band yourself to alter between 45 + 33. It has no auto return either, so it just hangs in the groove at the end. Sounds like a drag, but it's actually pretty cool.

Mine is kinda like this:

Would recommend them for sure!
