Great band, it's good to see that there is renewed interest in Unholy nowadays. They were very underrated back in the day, but nonetheless highly original. It was quite common back then for doom metal bands to sell considerably less than other subgenres of metal.

Actually I don't believe anything has changed. If someone says there is a sudden interest on Unholy, then it's definitely label/media hype only.

For a long time I thought these LP's would never happen. But glad to be wrong...

"From the shadows" is such an azaming album. Massive sound, total sinister atmosphere and pefect blend of Black and Doom Metal.
Still sends shivers down my spine as it did when I first heard it as a 13 year old haha.

It's insane that in this day and age these albums don't get a proper vinyl treatment. Every fart from the 90's in being reissued.

This album is for me the best depressive/doom album ever recorded.

I've been giving From the shadows a lot of listens lately, but it doesn't quite click with me, is there a way you 'approach' this album, because i like a lot of similar sounding stuff.

there you have it..

UNHOLY - TWO CLASSIC ALBUMS FROM THE LEGENDARY FINNISH DOOM METAL ACT, ON VINYL FOR THE FIRST TIME

Unholy, from Finland, formed in 1988 and were among the first doom metal bands from the country. In the band’s earlier years, starting under the moniker of Holy Hell, their style began as more a black/death/doom metal mix but progressed to a style of atmospheric, experimental doom metal. Unholy recorded 4 albums throughout their career before disbanding in 2002 and leaving a legacy as a very influential and legendary act in the Finnish doom metal scene who are still highly respected today. Unholy is often recognised as one of the forefathers of the funeral doom sub-genre.

FROM THE SHADOWS – 22nd September

‘From the Shadows’ was the band’s debut full-length album and was originally released back in 1993. The album was known for its dark textured death/doom metal mixed with some unusual & often avantgarde arrangements. Unholy’s willingness to experiment with sounds and moods helped create a strong and uniquely twisted atmosphere on ‘From the Shadows’; slow pounding doom metal epics aided by the presence of creeping synths.

THE SECOND RING OF POWER – 6th October

‘The Second Ring of Power’ was the band’s second studio album, originally released in 1994, & continued the boundary breaking approach to experimental doom metal which the band had established with ‘From the Shadows’, mixed with strong atmospherics & unusual structures. Unholy has remained a cult act over the years.

I had a chat about them with the Avantgarde label guy who produced the Unholy CD's back in the days: he said they were one of his worst selling bands, there was very little interest in them, even when he sold all the Avantgarde back catalogue' rights to Peaceville they were considered a "second-tier" band inside the deal.
He said the same for Thergothon and that kind of bands in general.

Yep. These bands are not popular, just some of the fans are noisy at times.

Also Ahdistuksen Aihio still has the demo LP's in stock which were released 6 years ago.

The demo LPs probably could have benefitted from being released as true box set, instead of separate LPs, but who knows. Unholy is indeed a pretty obscure kind of band in the grand scheme of things.

I'd like see a CD collection of those demos be released someday, as I sold my copies with my vinyl collection.

If it was a boxset, then all of you would complain it's too expensive etc fsbgkjspöbgjs.

Yes i bought it when it was boxset Awesome demos material! Fuckin' dark.
But in my ears, also all UNHOLY albums are killers, even with female vocals!

The demos are quite an acquired taste, due to being very inaccessible.

The first two full lengths on the other hand are not only pretty much perfect, but also you could hardly find similar sound elsewhere. I love the juxtaposition between the extreme vocals, beautiful guitars and constant rhythm changes. Definitely does not work as background music.

I really hope they'll sell well enough to justify the release of their final two full lengths - although quite different and not so unique I love them too and find them superb:)))

Same here.

UNHOLY are the perfect example of greatness not translating into sales.
