I mostly record one instrument at a time, so I'm not sure how helpful this is:
I use a POD Studio UX-1, which is very similar to that M-Audio Fast Track pictured above, (Almost same price too) but it has the advantage of coming with POD Farm, which is lots of fun. (If you play guitar, that is!) If you need more inputs & phantom power, look into the UX-2 instead.
I also highly recommend REAPER (http://www.reaper.fm/) as a multitracker - It's extremely cheap & just as powerful as CUBASE.

PS - Avoid USB microphones if possible. They create so much latency that live monitoring of vocals along with music is problematic. To combat this some even have a headphone jack on the mic itself! I say just get a USB interface with phantom power & use whatever XLR mics you like.

If you buy some M-Audio (Avid) stuff + Pro Tools try to get the LE Edition, I think itīs more comfortable and has more options than the M-powered Edition (might be a bit more expensive though)

If you want a multitrack device ... Thatīs what I use...
http://www.presonus.com/products/detail.aspx?productid=3

Not sure if I can recommended it though... There are probably better ones out there but I canīt compare since I never used anything else...
I had lotīs of problems with hiss and crackles on the rrecordings when I first buyed it...
For some reason that problem does not exist anymore.. I think it was some kind of software related problem....
And it was a nightmare to get it started with whatever DAW I use...in
I currently use it with Adobe Audition 1.0 and it works and sounds fine...
I use it only to record drums though or if I want to do a full band rehearsal recording for example...
Recording when I record one instrument only I use the cheap USB thing which came with my Behringer mixing board. In that way I can also adjust EQ and stuff before recording which gives me quite good possibilities getting the sound I want...

Ive been looking as well and had this recommended by a music shop guy:

http://www.native-instruments.com/#/en/products/producer/komplete-audio-6/?page=1903

It seems to be a pretty good looking little unit and I havent seen any bad reports around, might be worth looking at.

I think Ill probably end up getting it Laughing

Multi-jacks, they take both XLR and TRS jacks in one!

Yep, XLRs go straight into that, the pins go into the ends of the T bit, if you've got TRS instead that goes straight into the middle of the T bit. Handy as fuck!

I'm probably going to get one of the M-Audio models myself. My system fits the requirements and I've heard good things so far. And the price is right.
