Find it really odd when bands do this. It can't be much to pay someone or offer merch for art if one can already afford instruments, recording time, etc. Also they could draw something crude themselves that may turn out well if they have some will power.

This is not supposed to be an excuse, but I can imagine that some bands just hire someone to do their artwork and on't even know that parts of it were stolen. I'm actually quite sure about this.

As I said, it's no excuse, whoever does this, musician or "artist" should get (insert your preferred form of punishment here).

I wouldn't want to be in a band that has to find out that their artwork they probably paid good money for was ripped off from some other album.

An Indonesian slam band called "Cruciamentum" decided to steal our logo and turn it green. When I asked them to stop using the logo they claimed it was "simply in tribute" and then blocked me.

Last year a south american label used an artwork that Boris Haimov exclusively did for Mortuus Umbra on their Facebook page and they simply added their lettering to the original graphic.

Heh! Although the overuse of certain Doré artworks is not really about stealing. It's just about having no own vision at all but taking from others ideas. About as much when the famous Witches Sabbath art (The Black, Infernum and soooo many others) usage.

of course it's not really stealing but you know, if you think about identical artworks, how you cannot think about doré?
... maybe it's better if someone start another topic about the overuse / abuse of his works in metal eheh Razz

No doubt this is true. It's hard to believe how little involvement some bands have in their work. We've hired artists for most projects I've been involved with. But we never just give them full control of the full reigns. If you're going to use symbols and imagery, why is it not inspired by you personally?

WTF? Are they still active? Their Twitter account with your logo is still up (although they haven't posted anything since 2014): https://twitter.com/ccmm_slamm?lang=en

Some shitty Russian rap group used one of my bands' album covers. The band was pretty pissed, but I wasn't about to go try to fight copyright laws in Russia over something like that, so I just laughed and gave up.

I've no idea. It was a couple of years back this all happened, so hopefully they've fucked off now. At the time I was pretty angry about it, but I think it's quite funny now.
