|
|
What metal bands have good hooks, or at least have memorable songs which stand apart from each other on the album? I have so many albums which have a great "overall" sound but few songs stick out or end up being something I dig out just to listen to a particular song.
Some examples of metal bands with catchy songs and good hooks (imo)
Slayer (kind of obvious)
Macabre (even if they use some non-metal type way of making a song catchy)
Mutiilation (one of the few BM bands which manage to get stuck in my head)
Grand Belial's Key
I'll leave the list open to expansion.... |

GBK`s Shemhamforash and Fould parody of the lords supper, is the most catchy bm ever. I never get tired of those two songs.
Malign- sinful fleshspear, comes to mind also, satyricons- fuel for hatred,
Most of the newest Marduk, and Casus Lucifieri from Watain, and most memorable blackmetal song ever IMO: Misery's Omen- Desolate winds of mars. |

A hook incites repeat listens, like you want to hear it again and again. I think that's what most people mean when they say it.
Much different than the bands listed in the first post, but SARCASM 'Crematory' LP!!! Does it get any better than that? I'll wear that record out before I'm dead for sure. |

Hook means a catchy part of a song, something that sticks in your head, or something that makes you want to sing along, listen to the song again and again, or put it on a tape for your friends.
Nowadays "hook" is sometimes used like "chorus" (the repeated part of a song, for example "who let the dogs out, who who who") when talking about pop music, as basically every hit single needs to have a hook, which is usually the chorus.
In metal since the vocals aren't sung with a lot of range (in modern extreme metal) the hooks come from guitar parts or possibly the "pattern" in which the song is sung/screamed/gurgled. |

Good ones, I heard good hooks on Malign (need to dig that one out) and Satyricon also has Mother North and Hvite Krists Død, both of which have good hooks. |

Maniac Butcher - Fight of Faith with the Church & Immortal Death (Immortal Death demo, someone needs to make a LP Version of it)
Maniac Butcher - Oci Obeti (Krvestreb)
Kreator - Carrion & pleasure to kill (Pleasure To Kill)
Törr - Kladivo Na Carodejnice
Slayer - the whole Show No Mercy esp. the first three tracks
etc etc
that Shemhamforash of GBK is from the demo. Very wicked and morbid, nasty vocals too _________________ Good/Bad traders list

| its always seemed to me that among the endless muck of blasphemy clones very few of them seem to realize that blasphemy and other bands who have managed to play this style with expertise all have really catchy parts. i mean its ok to play fast and record the shit all blown out and distorted to capture the bestiality of it, but dont forget to write songs that someone actually wants to listen to...hooks are essential to writing good songs. |
