That's it. I'm going to throw away my old(152 b.c.)vinyl player. Any suggestions about a new one?

Pro-ject seems to be the way to go nowadays, price/quality.

I guess there are some other forums in the English language as well with tests and reports about decent vinyl players.

no one can even try to answer this unless you specify the price range and your requirements. The nicest tables cost $10,000+ but I don't think you want to spend that much.

I have a NUMARK turn table, which my GF got me for me bday. It was $500, without the stylus, which was another $80. Good thing about the one she got me, is that it has a USB port so I can hook it up to my MAC and make high quality MP3 rips. The thing is built like a fuckin tank too !!

I'm not fussy with turntables, just standard pioneer etc usually

What's important to me is the amp and speakers. So get big ones. I like to have a turntable/tape deck combo hooked up to some huge speakers.

Any reason why the turntable itself is important? Obviously a good quality one that won't break... but I see it as mostly in the speakers you use, and then the volume knob when you put in a Parabellum tape.

Best suggestion for a new turntable ? -> Don't buy a new one !! If you're not going to spend 1000/$ < you'll get bad quality compared to older models.

Get a good condition used high-end player (ebay) - maybe a Thorens, Linn, Rega Planar or Transrotor ! Then buy a new needle and that's it ! There's not much that can be damaged at all. If it turns, it's ok. You'll have fun for the next decade with it...

edit: only english or swiss/german tt if you're after quality. Very Happy

I also use a Sansui, with a dual head/stylus though.
As another poster wrote there should be some boards with information about current models or the availability of older models.
Also, check if there are soe smaller hi-fi stores around - I prefer not to buy at chains as they tend to have shitty (if any at all) customer service.

Look for a used Rega Planar 2 / 3, a Thorens TD2001 / TD320 MK***, Linn Basik or a higher Pro-Ject Model (6 and <) ! These are, in a used but good condition, in your range of money...

If you have GOOD luck, buy a used Transrotor. But the chances aren't that good, as most of these go for 500<.
