lol, really? |
Im less surprised with that answer then I am with "Repugnant - Epitome of Darkness". I'm kinda grossed out so many people have ranked that along side ALTARS ect... |
The Repugnant LP is absolutely worthy of making it to these lists...one of the best death metal albums ever created without a doubt. I'm not surprised at all to see it here. _________________

oh man..... this is tough........ are we going for OUR personal opinion, taste-wise, or those we feel are the greatest by way of IMPORTANCE? Because, for instance, I much prefer "Pierced From Within" over "Effigy Of the Forgotten" but I would never be so naive to claim the former to be more historically important than the latter.
anyway, the first 4 are easy:
Morbid Angel - Altars of Madness
Morbid Angel - Blessed Are The Sick
Morbid Angel - Covenant
Morbid Angel - Formulas Fatal To The Flesh
I'm gonna have add:
Nile - "Black Seeds of Vengeance." This album set the bar for everything they've done since, and it shook the metal world to the core when it came out.
On top of that....... Incantation - "Onwards to Golgotha" truly deserves to be in this list, for its evil, brooding melody and crushing-doom heaviness.
And.... Entombed - "Left Hand Path" needs to be in this, because without it, Swedish death metal just would not have been the way it became. I personally like Clandestine more, but I think Left Hand Path holds greater importance, while being equally enjoyable.
I'm going to have to throw in Mithras - "Worlds Beyond The Veil" here, too, because of that album's glorious vision and boldness. They did what Nile did, in bringing a completely new element to death metal. Yeah, sure, Leon Macey is as geeked on "Formulas" as I am and its blatantly obvious, but Mithras is so much more than that..... if they'd had proper promotion, they would have easily become the next big thing.
I have to throw Centurian's "Choronzonic Chaos Gods" and Rebaelliun's "Burn The Promised Land" on there, too, because those albums ushered in a new era for the new millenium, and both of them should have become reigning kings of the scene, were it not for lineup instability. Both had raging success so early, and bowed out well before they rightfully should have.
So I guess thats it then..... so many left unmentioned, though:
Severe Torture - Feasting On Blood
Vital Remains - Into Cold Darkness
Hate Eternal - Conquering The Throne
Origin - Origin
Diabolic - Subterraneal Magnitude and Supreme Evil
Vader - De Profundis
Malevolent Creation - 10 Commandments
But I must, must, must include a caveat for these few demos which I have been listening to lately, because their music has hooked me in so hard, and I really, truly honestly believe their music to be equal to and better than the "big shots" we have today. If ever you should take a chance on some death metal, I fucking beg you to do so with these tapes:
Ritual Torture - "Rise of The Fallen"
These guys play classic death metal that is heavily Vader-inspired (and even with a cover of Vicious Circle) combined with some SoCal thrash. This shit is catchy, memorable, and just fucking awesome. Amazing lead work that does Vader justice, and the shit sticks with you.

Exterminatorium/Necrobscure - "South America Inferno Attack"
Both of these bands are from Brazil; Exterminatorium plays a very viable version of Krisiun/Abhorrence/Rebaelliun death metal. They're young, hungry, and its fun to hear them play it. They sound quite a bit like Abhorrence's "Evoking the Abomination" but with a little tastey dash of melody in there.
Necrobscure on the other hand, is just fucking.... incredible. They play more "Blessed Are The Sick" and "Covenant" inspired stuff, couple with the heavy thrashy headbanging of Deicide and Malevolent Creation. This stuff is so good... the guitar playing is incredible; this kid knows how to do it. He takes Trey's style and adds some melody into it, and the riffing is really fucking good, too. It really seriously pisses me off that this tape isn't more widely heralded and listened-to.

Escarnium/Inside Hatred - "Celebrating The World of Decadence"
Inside Hatred plays a kind of doomy Incantation-meets-Father Befouled death metal. Its not my normal thing, but its really good, and they have a really good sense of melodic movement that keeps the music interesting. AND there's a cover of Incantation's "Nocturnal Dominium," from "Mortal Throne of Nazarene"!!!!!
Escarnium, though, is where the fucking gem is....this stuff is just fucking incredible. Its more Swedish-based, but with the ferocity of Krisiun. Their music is so fucking well-written and memorable, its really awe-inspiring. What really sets them apart is their ability to write great hooks...as in like, memorable musical events (as opposed to just straight drum beats and riffs repeated 4 times)

I would include more but I gotta get going to my internship. But really, those 3 tapes are so good... they deserve to be heard and bought. _________________ ANGELDEATH - death metal --> for fans of Krisiun, Centurian, Defaced Creation, Morbid Angel, Vital Remains, Luciferion, Immortal, Necrophobic, Hate Eternal, Deicide, Diabolic, Rebaelliun, Throneaeon, Angelcorpse
