Following on from the day job thread, I'd be interested to know what people have studied or currently are studying. Going through the other thread some will be pretty obvious job-relevant degrees but some I'm sure will have backgrounds in something completely different to their current career. This shouldn't be restricted to university-level stuff either, if you studied something unusual at high school level or were in any sort of alternative schooling system chime in with that.

I'll start off- I have a BA in English from Queens University Belfast. I could have gone down the linguistics route with it but that side of things never interested me that much (the history of English language is fascinating but things like child language acquisition not so much) so instead took modules in various kinds of literature- early modern drama (including film adaptations of Shakespeare), modern Irish (Joyce, Beckett, Flann O'Brien, Sheamus Heaney...), American crime fiction and Anglo-Saxon translation (poetry, chronicles, bestiaries etc.) I also did an introduction to philosophy module, Nietzsche from a literary rather than philosophical perspective, and ethnomusicology which can pretty much be summed up as "hippie bongo class." Good times.

I was at one point supposed to be continuing on to a research post-grad on Joyce but declined it in the end. I do intend to go back to academia at some point but most likely not in anything literary.

BA in English Philology. I also am not interested in child language acquisition that much, I prefer reading about British history, stages of English language, some literature and so forth. English is not my mother tongue so I don't think I will be able to learn everything about it yet I still keep on trying to compensate some of the gaps.

Diploma in radio and television production right out of high school.

Got bored with that line of work, got my diploma in social work a few years later.

it's not a degree so I'm not actually a social worker, I had big plans to finish it as a degree, get my masters, etc. Instead real life took over, I got married, bought a house, my wife went back to school, so I'm sort of stuck where I am, and to get my next level of education would take me 10 years, and I plan to retire in 20. So fuck it.... My job pays great with awesome benefits and to get to the next level I would have to spend 60,000 to make 8-10 moreover year.

I would really like to become a butcher of some kind, I plan to max out my pension, pay off my house and spend my final days in a butcher shoppe (or cheese store, or making beer).

As said elsewhere, master's degree in aesthetics (a branch of philosophy). Completey useless for getting a job, but it was interesteing to study and I could even write my final thesis about experimentalism in the history of rock music with a local composer of classical music as my tutor.

AS degree in Mortuary Science. I'd like to go back and further my education, possibly in Forensic Psychology, or some sort of business management. I could move into the corporate backend of the death industry but it's a big step. My wife wants to get her PhD and her education comes first because she's the actual breadwinner in the house.

BA in Art. Pretty worthless as I haven't done anything with it. Thinking of getting a different degree so I can move into a field that I enjoy.

finishing my MA in german and english philology right now, "majoring" in german literature. our system is a bit diffferent to the US system, but thats about the equivalent.

I actually handed in my final thesis a few weeks ago, judgement pending.

I was offered a job at my university, so Ill probably stay there and go for phd while mainly teaching aspiring german teachers how to properly spoil literature to their students.

there are so many worse jobs out there, so I wont complain.

I'm getting my BSc of Computer Science and Discrete Mathematics in a couple of months. I've been applying for jobs recently and interviews have been going well.

I guess I'll end up as a programming drone somewhere to begin with. It's going to be so much better than living as a poor student.
